Windows 10: Can't activate Windows after hardware upgrade

Hi folks, I recently upgraded my mobo and cpu (and others) and I have an Activate Windows message at the bottom right of my screen.


So, I went to the Activation tab in Settings and I get the following message:

We can't activate Windows on this device because the product key was already used on another device. If you think it wasn't used on another device, select Troubleshoot below. Error code: 0xC004C008

After pressing Troubleshoot, it says:

Troubleshooting has completed

We weren't able to activate Windows on this device.

There's an option for when you've changed hardware so I press this, which takes me to Reactivate Windows 10 screen. I select my device and press activate. (I previously had a Gigabyte mobo and my new one is also Gigabyte).

The next window shows:


Unable to activate Windows.

We can't reactivate Windows on this device. Try again later.


The only options it now gives me are learn more or purchase a new key from the windows store.


The copy I have was actually restored via remote desktop from someone associated from Microsoft I'm sure, when I previously updated my motherboard. I still have the original key and the installed key. I'm sure the disk I got years ago was Windows 7 or 8 that was given to me by my college at the time.


I hope this is enough information. I tried to include as much as I could.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

activating windows 10 after hardware upgrade

hi

trying to activate windows 10 after hardware update but it keeps saying no

i followed the troubleshooter steps but something goes wrong and it just says oops try again later...

any suggestions?

Activating Windows 10 Pro After a Hardware Upgrade!

I followed all the steps to linking my Windows 10 Pro to my Microsoft account so that I could upgrade my hardware, reinstall Windows 10 Pro, and activate it, but it's not working. I'm signed into my Microsoft account. I tried the activation troubleshooter,
selecing that I recently changed hardware, etc. Nothing is working. I can see my old computer under my Microsoft account, as well as my new one (with better hardware). I changed the motherboard, ram, and CPU. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

 

Activation after new hardware upgrades?

Right - my point was to see what would happen if I tried the OS from one system on a totally different motherboard, and it went better than I expected, other than the activation - which I expected. I did chat with a Microsoft rep today online and he confirmed that after the hardware upgrade on a free Win10 upgrade that they (Mircosoft) will have to remote access my system to verify the proper key, etc. before they can reactivate it.
