Windows 10: Cant adjust brightness level after Windows update

Good afternoon,

I apologise in advance for my tone but I am absolutely livid with MS.

I had a windows 10 update on my HP Spectre laptop last night and ever since then I am unable to adjust my screen brightness via any method I know, certainly not via the f2/f3 keys, they have stopped working. My screen is now light a concentration camp searchlight, it is unbearable and will undoubtedly lead to headaches and eye strain, not to mention the fact that the battery will not last as long after each charge. I spent 2 hours last night until midnight and I have early morning work trying to find a fix for this without success. There is all manner of suggestions on the inet, ranging from updating display/graphics driver done to adjusting brightness via the power management options, none of these worked. Reading further today, this appears to go back to 2020 as a problem and amazingly it is still causing problems.


How dare MS leave people in this situation, dictating what our visual experience is and leaving us in the lurch like this.

I AM REALLY ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED AND AM SAYING TO MS PLEASE GIVE ME A FIX FOR THIS WITHIN 24 HOURS, I USE MY LAPTOP CONSTANTLY BUT CANT USE IT WITH THE CURRENT SCREEN BRIGHTNESS. IF YOU KNOW/KNEW IT IS A PROBLEM WHY NOT LEAVE THE f2/f3 WORKING AS NORMAL. I'M SORRY BUT IF I DONT GET ANY SATISFACTION FROM THIS I WILL BE LOOKING UP SOME MS EXECUTIVES WITH A BIG COMPLAINT. Therefore please help resolve this quickly.

Brightness can not be adjusted.

Hi Sirajudeen,

Do let us know the following to assist you better with this issue:

• What is the make and model of your device?
• Were you able to see any error message/ error code with this issue?
• Have you tried to install all the pending updates for drivers and Windows Updates on your device?

This issue might have happened due to corrupted/ outdated drivers.

I suggest you to refer to the below Microsoft article, try the troubleshooting steps suggested to change the brightness and check if it helps.

Brightness Level Adjustment Issues

Cannot adjust brightness after upgrading to mobile build 10586.218. Same brightness, all the time. Will not change brightness level from either Action Center or Display settings. Does anyone know if there is a workaround for this?
