Windows 10: Can't connect to internet after installing Creators Update

I'm gonna recommend something, you won't like... If you don't have a lot of different applications installed... maybe it would be the fastest way to resolve your problem with clean install of Windows.

It is interesting to resolve such problems, but there could be very time consuming.. If you decide to clean install Windows, roll back to working system, make backup (Macrium reflect is highly recommended here - make system image) and go with fresh install.

Windows refresh reset could resolve your problem, but consequences would be the same as clean install.

If you decide to do so, let me know, if I could help. Otherwise, I could do some (google) search to help you remove Open VPN.
I remember, that new installs of Open VPN have some kind of install manager, so try to reinstall new version of Open VPN and find that manager (it's command prompt utility).

 

One more thing.. Did you perform uninstall in Windows before upgrade, or after? Should have been before....

I think you're right about clean install.
Not much to back up at all.

Anyway, I can't figure out OpenVPN.

Tried removing network adapters in DOS but they're "being used by another program"?

This rabbit hole is getting way too deep for me.
My ISP tech support guy just told me to forget it.
That's what he's telling other folks. LOL!
He doesn't like WIN 10. (Still uses 8.)

 

I meant to uninstall Open VPN (before upgrade. That adapter driver obviously doesn't allow system upgrade.
There are some install - uninstall instructions on their forum.

But, if there really isn't much to backup... I would go for clean install. Not so much problems at all. And when you're at it, after fresh install and setup of your basic applications, make System image with Macrium, and after that you're 15 minutes from fresh Windows installation, whatever happen.

 

I ended up doing a clean install on a troubled Dell which would not allow any internet connectivity.
That was the quickest.

Got caught in some sort of Twilight Zone of infinite recursion
stuck in "Just a moment" as the dots oin round & round.

None of the diagnostic tools could fix it. Couldn't roll back either.

Wouldn't use system restore point or "last working version".

It's a boat anchor.

Maybe that update wasn't such a good idea

 

Did you went for clean install (booting via USB drive, deleting old partition and creating new) or update?

 

I went with clean install... but it got "stuck" after 2nd restart

 

I asked because you said something about restore points etc. (might read wrongly ...)

Any success? If install still doesn't go trough, check, if you have any USB devices connected and disconnect them. I.e. your wifi dongle and also USB mouse can be the culprit.

 

Disconnected everything.
Tried every repair/restore/reboot method.
Can't even do a clean install.
It just gets stuck at a certain point.
Must be a lot of corrupted files to clean up.
CHKDSK would be useful at this point.

Windows 10 is ostensibly dead on this PC
that's for sure.

 

You're mentioning restore / repair etc...

In Windows install select advanced... delete existing Windows partition and let Windows install in empty space. No chkdsk needed.

 

Tried that as well with no success.

I just gave up & went way back to Windows 7 (!)
PC runs a LOT faster now.

Good Luck and thanks for posting back. One of hardware components won't allow this upgrade. Strange, since previous Win 10 version worked...

If you decide to research a bit more. Try to install previous Windows, but clean and then upgrade to the latest Windows 10.
