Windows 10: Can't create a recovery drive.

Not really truth be told.
No idea why it refuse to run at this point.
That said , it doesn't hurt to solve some issues on that machine at this point.

Frankly, it could be anything from disk errors to access rights. Which is why I asked to collect as much info as possible.

What I don't quite understand is that you said in your opening post that you reinstalled Windows 10 already.
Yet there are still 2 Recovery partitions?
When you reinstall Win10 (as in a clean) you should opt to delete all existing partitions related to Windows. IOW, all but the ones you created yourself for say data storage or whatever.
Then Windows will create the partitions it requires and all should be well.

While I personally have no issues with creating a recovery backup I much more prefer to use Macrium Reflect Free to image my system.
That said, there's little point in backing up a crippled system so lets solve the issue.

it is partition 3, the 449mb partition.

In reality, recovery drives are not really that important with Windows 10 as you can simply create a usb installation stick using media creation tool.

In addition, recovery drives get out of date after each build upgrade.

More important thing to do is to backup your drivers.

Agreed but the fact that it refuses to run and stubbornly so is indicative of a problem within the system.
Little point in making backups of systems that are questionable IMHO.

I had that problem with 10240, and after 10586 came out problem went away. It will probably just go away after update to RS1.

 

I think it's because the Recovery Drive process itself is flaky. *Wink
I had a computer where I clean installed Win10 on the OS partition, leaving a data partition and the original Win7 recovery partition. So Windows 10 itself should have been pristine... but Create Recovery Drive still doesn't work.

 

As my Asus PC came with OEM win 10 home and I subsequently moved to a digital win 10 Pro from Microsoft, I do not have keys for either platforms. Is a clean install still possible?

It should be no problem. If it has been activated already there should be a digital entitlement on MS servers.
Hopefully that will cure the problem.
If not then I suggest making images with a third party program such as Macrium Reflect Free.

I had two machines, both refused to make a recovery drive with the System files box checked.

I ran SFC on one and it showed the opencl.dll (Nvidia) as being repaired. The Recovery Drive creation worked after a reboot.

The other machine showed the same bad file and could not repair it. I had to uncheck the System files check box to get a recovery drive, which only contains the Recovery Tools.

So, from what I have seen, possibly the Recovery Tools image path is not correct or there is a bad system file. Unchecking the System files box may allow for at least a basic Recovery drive.
