    Can't Enable Developer Mode.

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are facing issues in enabling Developer mode. I’ll certainly help you with the issue.

    However, please let us know:

    • Are you using Windows 10 Home or Pro?

As you have mentioned that you are using Windows 10 Home, I would like to inform that Group Policy editor is not available in Home edition of Windows.

However, let me share an article that might help you in enabling Developer mode using Registry Editor. I would suggest you to refer the section
Use group policies or registry keys to enable a device from the article

    Enable your device for development
    .

Note: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow
these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

    Follow the steps to take
    backup of registry
    .

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,

  3. Not able to enable/disable Developer Mode, sideload apps and access other developer features

    Hi Krishna -

    Thanks for the response.

gpedit.msc is not available on Windows 10 Home or Starter and you can't install it manually as it can only be found on Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise version.

Since gpedit.msc is inaccessible to your computer we can try to modify the registry of your computer to fix the issue. Please follow the steps below and check if it resolves your concern.

Registry Editor is a very powerful tool and directly affects your PC and its performance. It is advised that you proceed with caution and follow the steps very carefully.

    1. Press Windows Key + R then type regedit and hit Enter to open Registry Editor.

    2.Navigate to below registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModelUnlock

    3. In the right pane locate AllowAllTrustedApps entry. If entry is no available;

    a. .Right-click on AppModelUnlock then select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

    b. Name this newly created DWORD as AllowAllTrustedApps and hit Enter.

    c. Similarly, create a new DWORD with the name AllowDevelopmentWithoutDevLicense.

    4. Now depending on your choice set the value of the above registry keys as:

Windows Store apps – Set the value of AllowAllTrustedApps and AllowDevelopmentWithoutDevLicense to 0

Sideload apps – Set the value of AllowAllTrustedApps to 1 and AllowDevelopmentWithoutDevLicense to 0

Developer mode – Set the value of AllowAllTrustedApps and AllowDevelopmentWithoutDevLicense to 1

    5. Once finished, close everything and restart your PC.

Alternatively you can use powershell to make the changes ( given that the 2 registry entry is present on your computer)

    1. Open the powershell command with administrator access

    2. Type the below commands based from what you want to do:

    a. To enable sideloading, run this command:

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModelUnlock" /t REG_DWORD /f /v "AllowAllTrustedApps" /d "1"

    b. To enable developer mode, run this command:

    PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppModelUnlock" /t REG_DWORD /f /v "AllowDevelopmentWithoutDevLicense" /d "1"

Restart your computer and check if the selection changed.

Hope this helps, have a good day.

    Thanks,
