Can't Get Out of S mode

Have a buddy whose charging port became unusable, so he bought a new laptop and gave it to me along with the old unit.

He wanted me to get stuff off his old HDD, pictures, docs, music, etc. But he also wanted to get his favorites off Chrome and put them on the new laptop.

Well he purchased a Lenovo 3330-S, so even though we could download Chrome (using Edge. of course) we couldn't install it, since Windows 10 in S mode only allows you to download items from the Windows Store. How they expect an effed up setup like that to be workable is beyond me. Can't download music, manuals, anti-virus, torrents, Revo Uninstaller, AdwCleaner, CCleaner, et al. Useless.

But, at any rate, one can supposedly go into Settings, Update & Security, Activation and switch out of S Mode. Now I can get to the store with that path, but can't get out of S Mode. I can do a search in the Store for Switch Out Of S Mode, and it finds it, along with a clickable Learn more.

Clicking that does nothing beyond taking me back to the Store (which is now devoid of anything). An hour later it's still showing nothing.

I did the latest Windows Updates and am signed on as the Administrator.

My friend's about ready to return this - it's only a few days old. BestBuy, where he bought it said that if he spends 89 bucks for Norton, he'll be able to get out of S mode. That makes no sense to me. If we can't install Chrome, how would we install Norton? Lenovo says that the warranty only covers hardware issues, but for a 'nominal fee' ($69.00) they could fix it. Only hardware? So if a brand new Lenovo PC fails to run Windows, we'd have to pay the nominal fee to get it fixed? How are they still in business?

    :)

  2. New FF - passwords

    Hi:

If that setting is already enabled, then I suggest as the next troubleshooting step might be Mozilla Safe Mode (not to be confused with Windows Safe Mode)):

Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode | Firefox Help

    • Please report back and let us know the outcome, as it will dictate the next steps.
    • Also: please tell us what AV/AM/firewall programs are you running on this system?

    Thanks,
    MM
