Windows 10: Can't install Hyper-V and Windows thinks I'm inside a virtual machine?

Running systeminfo in an elevated Command Prompt I get this:

Hyper-V Requirements: A hypervisor has been detected. Features required for Hyper-V will not be displayed.

This supposedly means I am currently running inside a virtual machine, but I'm not, and Hyper-V also fails to install with the following error:

The parameter is incorrect.

Error code: 0x80070057.
​

Can anyone help?

(This is on a brand new Windows 10 installation - Installed and uninstalled VirtualBox, if it helps in pinpointing the problem)

Hyper-V Virtual Machine not recognised

The folder where your VM is do you see a .vhd file?

Where is the Hyper V Manager, How to I start it ?

I am trying to setup an XP virtual Machine on Windows 10 Pro.

I followed the steps in Neil Peterson article of 5/9/2016.

System Requirements - done - ok

Install Hyper-V - done - ok

Create a Virtual Switch - skip

Create a Virtual Machine

Create a Virtual Machine with Hyper-V Manager

These steps walk through how to manually create a virtual machine and deploy an operating system to this virtual machine.

Uhhhhhhhhh - this step obviously implies one knows

1) Where the Hyper-V Manager is

2) How to start the Hyper-V Manager

Isn't that odd ?

 

Installing a Virtual Machine in Windows 10

Step #1 is to decide which virtual machine software you wish to install.

The three most popular choices are:

• VirtualBox (from Oracle)
• VMWare Workstation Player (from VMWare); and
• Hyper-V (from Microsoft)

Once you've made your choice you can find detailed, illustrated instructions for installing each one on the internet.

As a personal suggestion: You might find it easier to use either VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation Player. Hyper-V is more complicated to setup.

Between VirtualBox and VMWare, I think you'll find VirtualBox more user-friendly, and it has the advantage of allowing you to create checkpoints - backups of your virtual machine - whereas to do that in VMWare you'll need to upgrade to their (expensive!)
paid version.
