Windows 10: can't run install file ' these files can't be opened'

it worked for me unblocking the file in the properties windows. Also there is another way that is settings the internet options, internet custom level, allow launching applications and unsafe files to disable

 

You can also make a new folder in a different location and copy all the files into that folder and try opening.

 

The reason file is "locked" and wont run is because the file name is too long.

eg.
path
C:\users\%username%\downloads\SOME_REALLY_LONG_FILE_NAME_CONTAINING_A_COMPRESSED_ZIP_FILE\SOME_REALL Y_LONG_FILE_NAME_CONTAINING_A_COMPRESSED_ZIP_FILE\uncompressed.exe

When you uncompress the file, by default it will make a sub-directory with the same name and place it inside the working directory.
This ends up making the file name too long and it will not execute.

@reddwarf4ever When you placed the file in the C directory you basically just shortened the overall path/filename and fixed the issue.

 

The only reason I joined this forum was to say thank you gem600, you are a genius. This is exactly the solution to the issue I was having. I completely overlooked the long filename as a reason for the problem. Thank you.
