Can't run services.msc and gpedit.msc (and possibly others

The "run" desktop command app has gone awry. Typing at least two items in the "run" window brings nothing (not even a window or an error message). I can open these services and gpedit commands directly (by typing the dot msc in the win/serarch bar or via clicking menu in control panel (thus without using the run app).

And also when I do end up opening the gpedit.msc app I still get a prioblem: a blank window with only the menus appears accompanied only by a red colored "x" dotted message "mmc could not create the snap-in".

    :)

I can't set a slideshow in the Lock Screen and one of the Microsoft suggestions to use gpedit msc didn't work

I can't set up a slideshow for the lock screen. I can select a picture from the computer or I can select one of the Windows 10 standard pictures. If I select slideshow it doesn't change the PREVIEW and when the computer is inactive I get a black screen.

One of the suggestions made by Microsoft in response to this problem in another post was to run gpedit msc. I have tried this or gpedit.msc or gpedit and in all cases the message I get is gpedit or gpedit.msc or gpedit msc "is not recognised as an
internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

How do I fix the lock screen problem or invoke the local group policy editor?

    Multiple duplicate .msc files

    Hi,

By definition, those file are related to software developer tools:

    • Comexp.msc is a type of MSC file associated with Microsoft Developer Network disc 3715 developed by Microsoft.
    • Certmgr.msc (Certificate Manager) tool handles certificates, certificate trust lists (CTLs), and certificate revocation lists (CRLs).
    • AzMan is a role-based access control (RBAC) framework that provides an administrative tool to run authorization policy and a runtime that permits applications to conduct access checks against that policy.

For better assistance, we recommend posting your issue on
    Microsoft Developer Network
forum since your issue will require some advance troubleshooting steps to be resolved. Also, deleting or modifying the files
may cause harm or conflicts to your computer.

Let us know if you have any other concerns.

Can't run msc or regedit from start menu search (cortana)

Last edit; had the same problem on 3 different computers (towers and laptop, Home and Pro), everything is back to normal with no intervention.

    Weird...

    Major edit:

Just installed 10586 from scratch, no setting changed at all, installed latest (20.4.1) intel lan driver, reboot: execution of MSC and regedit from Cortana is broken...

    ----------------------Original post--------------------------------------
    Hi,

Since I moved Windows Search folder to another drive, I can't run any msc or regedit from start menu search (cortana) anymore.

No error message, just loading circle on mouse cursor then nothing, consoles don't show in taskmanager either.

However I can run services.msc this way... And Perfmon if I don't add .msc.

Still can run all msc through Win+R.

Index wipe+rebuild, user/search folder wipe, sfc /scannow: no success.

Reinstalled 10 pro from scratch, as soon as I moved search folder and reboot, it breaks again.

I can keep tearing my hair out, I don't understand what's wrong.

    Please help.

    Regards.
