Windows 10: Can't see one computer on network after reinstalling Windows 10

I had to reset windows 10 (big suprise). I had to try to change settings back as well as I could. Now I can't see 1 computer on my workgroup/network. I am new to making workgroups but it seemed like it was the only way to work sharing well between 3 different operating windows operating systems. What could be causing this problem? What am I doing wrong? And if there is a different way to have only 4 of 6 of the networked computers belong to a sharing group?*sarc

Can you set up a Homegroup which automates this process?
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-setup-and-ma.... If it's already enabled on any PC it needs to first be turned off on all of them with each restarted before starting setup on the main PC.

Thanks so much. I went to create a homegroup as you suggested and the fist question was something like 'do you want this computer to be visible to other computers on the network'. I clicked Yes, checked the other computers and found that the invisible had
become visible. I am sure I had set the visibility option somewhere else!

If you open the Network and Sharing Center and click on Change advanced sharing setting on each of the OC's. You should have them all set up as follows:

- Turn on network discovery - Selected
- Turn on automatic setup of network-connected devices - Selected
- Turn on file and printer sharing - Selected
- Turn off Public folder sharing - Selected
- Use 128-bit encryption to help... - Selected
- Turn off password protected sharing - Selected

I assume that you have checked that the workgroup name is the same on each PC? *Smile
Each workgroup type needs to be set to Work.

Are you running W10-home or W10-pro?
I have the same issue over here where the PC with W10-pro only shows its own shared folder and another PC with W10-home shows every shared folders on all of the other computers opened in the home-network. All PC's are connected by a router that W10-home does show and W-pro does not. Pinging name or IP-adress does show they are opened for communication for both IPv4 and IPv6 responce. But W10-pro tells me they are not. Even looked in GPedit.exe in W10-pro to find a setting that perhaps is more secure (??) but did not find anything upto now.
Both W10-home and W10-pro settings are the same and the installation is performed from the same DVD and run updates automaticly.

Yes and tried it again for you. Now disabled both Firewall: home and world. No difference. W10-pro refuses to see the other computers but pinging works fine. The computer with XP-pro (Dell) is not allowed to access the shared folder on W10-pro (Athlon) but can access the shared folder on the W10-home computer without problems.
The W10-home (Toshiba) shows all shares on all computers with active and default Firewall settings.

The problem is W10-pro. W10-home is still working like I was used in W7-pro and W7-home.
Microsoft Netherland says it has a solution but that would cost me $125,- for one year support!!!!!

When you created the workgroup, what type did you select at the first step? Also are you using a PIN or Password on your Pro PC?

As I read that using a pin or password makes a great difference as the pin is only known by W10 I use the password only on my pro. Have to say that on the W10-home the pin also does the job without any problems. I also found that even when you login with the pin to change settings they differ in showing permission: some ask for pin and others for password............

I followed the basic steps I was used to in W7 but have no screendumpvideo of it.
Created a private network for home and trusted people only.
Changed the name to "homenet" (not important just for fun).
Allowed access in this trusted network to connected home computers in network settings.
Added network shares by selecting "other account" to use the inlog-account of the PC with the shared for everyone folder.
This worked in home like in W7 and it did not work in pro at all.
W10-Home sees these folders in seconds after a mousclick where W10-pro is searching a long time and only finds its own share.

But I have to say that I also tried something else on the pro I read somewhere in the internet on a Geek-site:
opened the workgroup icon belw the network icon and added the home computer. Now all of the media (W10 wants to share with the whole world) is shared automaticly (at least I understand). As it did not help I disabled/deleted it again. Also did it because I do not like sharing things I not in command of.

In W10-pro you can also use GPedit.exe to manage all settings you can think of or did not know already. Also worked meself step for step through without any improvement. In W10-home GPedit.exe does not start up even if you copy it from pro.
Overall I have to say that W10-pro does its job BUT also is slower than W10-home on network and folder access. I get the idea that pro is doing a lot of things in the background. I will install MS NetworkMonitoring v 3.4 to see waht is going on. Used it once to follow up what Firefox was doing when I did not touch any key.

And what do see after clicking on Start ??????? Never seen it before. I am "not bound in". Well, have to internet to discover what that means.
In black I am pinging the router. MS NetworkMonitor v3.4 is installed properly like in W7-pro where it showed all of my in/out IP-traffic on mouseclick as I remember. This however looks like what is happening trying to access the shared folders in a home network. But without the note that in detail tells me what is wrong.

The first website I opened showed the same problem in Juli 2014 and the solution in the first reply. I have to "run as adminstrator" and doing so NMv34 does the job like I am used to in W7. Could this be a build in protective behaviour of W10-pro even when or if your account has administor rights as I can see checking it? Remember I changed it from standart to administor neglecting the warning not to do it. So I am not an adminstrator after all.........that would explain why W10 is asking me so often if I know what I am doing on my computer........

 

That's really strange, as I don't have any problems connecting a Win 10 Pro (With PIN) to a Win 7 Ult - I just needed to enter the account details on the Win 7 PC. Have you tried rebooting the router and both PC's after the changes - a long shot I know!

 

Tested several options and do not understand it anymore. Have to say that I managed getting ICT knowledge step by step (the wrong way) and only if neccessary. NM34 shows that communication with the router and the XP-pro is there. Only showing it in Explorer is not. I have a perfect working internet connection with Firefox and/or Edge. Pinging does work perfect for all devices in the network. Adding the IP of the router in Firefox opens it user/password screen. Only W10-pro and I start to guess Ult too do not show it in Explorer.

Found that I have to "run as administrator" for NM34 on all versions of W10 and W7. Must have forgotten it for W7, sorry. Anyhow, still having less problems on the home version. Pro is searching (green bar every time) the home network a long time and then tells me "timed out" or "not present" where I can see in NM34 that in some way they are communicating via the router with the XP-pro computer. If I mouseclick in home the XP-pro shared folder opens immediately without a green search bar. My best guess is that pro is not allowed to do something where home is. At least I cannot find any difference in any settings.

Next step will take some time for a network-technique-novice (me). I will perform an identical connection request to the XP-pro computer with W10-pro and W10-home. NM34 can save its log and I will look into both step by step if I can find and understand any difference. Will take some time as loads of lines are scrolling over the screen. Think tomorrow morning before taking a shower will suite best.
