Can't seem to connect some apps

Good afternoon, Dave. I see Simrick's helping you and I'm not going to butt in on her, because she knows what she'd doing 100%.

That said, ZDNet just posted a problem with Internet Explorer that I think you might need to read:

A well-resourced hacking group is using a previously unknown and unpatched bug in Internet Explorer (IE) to infect Windows PCs with malware.

Source: Internet Explorer zero-day alert: Attackers hitting unpatched bug in Microsoft browser | ZDNet

This is merely a heads up, since I think you use IE.

Sorry the delay had to go back for some additional servicing I wasn't expecting so took longer then expected.

No worries and an update I won't do anything else until I hear back from you on this as seems resolved.

So far since my last response you suggested a few things. All I have done so far was to change the address to google and that seemed to clear things up as I am connecting to Skype, Discord and the WOWS clan page again so things I have been unable to log into or access are now all accessible again..

Also to answer the question from that post all files are on the computer only things like back up files and videos and music and pictures and stuff are stored on back up drives but the computer files themselves are all on the C Drive.

Won't run the check disk unless you think it's really needed as I know from past experience and as you said it can take awhile but since things seem to be back up and working again it might not be needed?????

Thanks. I'll be on and off through out the afternoon as this mornings car servicing sort of messed up our schedule.

Hi Dave. Simrick has been tied up with family matters and can't get away until later on, so she asked me to relay a message for her:

"Oh, and would you please ask him to go ahead and run the CHKDSK? He has way too many reparse points, and I am worried about the health of his drive and system files. So, an sfc /scannow may be in order as well."

Maybe you could run the CHKDSK overnight? And then sfc /scannow in the morning?

It's good that you seem to have things back as they should be, but important to follow through with CHKDSK.

Oh, and it would be a good thing to download, install and use Mozilla's Firefox until we have the all clear on the Internet Explorer bug. Don't want all your hard work to be done in by malware. *Smile

OK just so I know both commands what exactly at the commands I need to enter in at the command prompt or are they exactly as you have them typed above?

I know chkdsk takes awhile how about the other how long does that one take?

And yes already use Firefox just a few things I use seem to go through explorer or explorer related settings so these were being blocked only reason I even knew I had an issue.

Not so worried so long as systems secure I only have to get it to last another month and half as gonna replace it anyways need a better system for gaming as this one just barely cuts it.

Thanks!

As just scrolled up and saw your other response no I mainly use Firefox and have for years but some apps like Weather channel and the store and The clan page in the World of Warships program all seem to go through explorers settings for connects as when something goes wrong it all seems to point back to these settings. I'll have a look through it though when I have time this evening!

Thanks!

You run both from the command line. I'm giving you links to instructions for both:

sfc /scannow How to Use SFC Scannow to Repair Windows System Files

CHKDSK Run Check Disk from the Command Line to Find and Fix Errors

Sfc /scannow should take from five to fifteen minutes. And, as you already know, CHKDSK, well, takes forever. That's why I suggested you run it overnight while you're sleeping. *Smile

Very good. I thought I saw a reference that you were using Internet Explorer for some things, so wanted to warn you. If at all possible, if FF won't work on some things for you, maybe Edge will? For now, it's "clean", i.e. no nasty bugs to exploit.

Hmmmm, could it be possible that Edge is taking you to those sites? I also use Firefox and I think it's Edge that goes to the Store, Microsoft's Weather app and their games. Don't quote me, though . . . *Smile

Bottom line is that if it's Edge going to those places, you should be safe, unless you actually use IE to get there.

Well not sure if edge or IE but something microsoft is being used as the default for these programs.

I know when I have issues with Weather Channels desktop app or can't access the clan page in the World of WarShips game program (In game not on the website) or store and IE then something is up and until this most recent one it was always a proxy being used that I did not set up. This time around though proxy was fine but was unable to access things like discord and Skype and the clan page (Weather and IE seemed to work just fine this time.

But unless I noticed one of these things having issues I would never have known being I don't use IE or Edge for that matter so find out mainly from WOWS or Weather that somethings up as for some reason Norton's does not pick up on this.

And roger that going out shortly so will let the check disk run while I am out maybe it will be done by time I return.

Hi.
Sorry for the delay. Thanks Wynona for stepping in.

Dave, the command I gave you was
Code: chkdsk /r C:
This needs to be run at an Admin Command Prompt

If your hard drive is large, and there are a lot of errors, yes, it could take a long time. OTOH, it could just take a few minutes if there are no problems and the drive is small. OTOOH, if there are many errors (tons of reparse points which need to be corrected), it could take several runs to correct things.

Once this is done, you can run
Code: sfc /scannow
(also at an Admin Command Prompt)

With regard IE and internet settings: Until W10, IE was the way a computer connected to the internet - it held all the protocols; you couldn't update via Windows Update if it wasn't working correctly. Many viruses attacked IE settings to prevent WUs, as a way of maintaining control over the system. That was one easy way to check if you were infected (think: Conficker) - see if you can check for updates.

IE still has some control over the connectivity in W10. The fact that you cannot get the setting to stay put is evidence of leftovers of an infection which has not been fully resolved. Forcing DNS resolvers in your NIC is only a band-aid. It is quite possible, that the infection leftovers could still be doing something (what, I don't know).

So, would you like to continue? Or, are you going to leave it as-is, and replace the system soon.

Nest steps would be to reset the TCP/IP and Winsock.

Run the following commands in an Admin Command Prompt:

Code: netsh int ip reset netsh int ipv6 reset netsh winsock reset
The first one removes all user-configured IPv4 settings (including the Google DNS servers).
The second one removes all user-configured IPv6 settings.
The third one resets the Winsock catalog to a clean state.

Then we need to run Ccleaner (free).
Download CCleaner | Clean, optimize tune up your PC, free!

Your passwords and bookmarks for FF are backed up, right?
Run Ccleaner on the browsers - all of them, and clean out everything in them.
Do not run it on anything else. Be sure to look at BOTH tabs:

Can't seem to connect some apps [IMG]

Can't seem to connect some apps [IMG]

Then go into Registry and check everything EXCEPT Help Files

Can't seem to connect some apps [IMG]

-Scan for Issues
-Backup
-Fix all Issues
-Rinse and repeat until it doesn't find anything anymore.

Then go to TOOLS>Browser Plugins
Go through each browser's tab and view all the plugins. Disable any that you don't need running in the browser or that you don't recognize.

Reboot the system.

If you are still having problems at this point, it might be wise to make sure the infection didn't somehow invade your router.

You're not torrenting, right? Because if you are, you need to stop, or all this is in vain. *Wink

"Running CHKDSK in read-only mode"
That's what happens when you don't specify a switch. I suggest using R, because R implies F. So, the command is
Code: chkdsk /r c:
How long did it take? I'd like to see it run with the R switch please...

Sorry about that didn't go back far enough and Wynona and I had a number of posts so that one got buried a page back. I'll run that one right now.

And honestly I am going to be replacing this computer most likely the first part of June as this ones older and just not good enough for some games so looking to replace this one in early June. So question really would be is it worth it or not to go to much further when what I was having issues with have sort of been fixed even if bandaided?
