Windows 10 - Documents folder is marked with read-only and I can't remove it

Try taking "ownership" of the folder:

ADD TAKE OWNER TO WIN10 CONTEXT MENU

Can't take ownership of external hard disk

I sorted this issue out after a few hours of following instructions here an elsewhere.

    Follow instructions to take ownership:

    Folder properties

    Security tab

    Advanced

Ensured ownership was correct - "Change" Ownership to MS ID name [my name (registered MS account registered email address)

I opened "permissions" properties for a folder that I did have access to and tried to ensure all properties were the same for the problem folder.

    [Properties/security tab/advanced/Permissions]

For the problem folder there were a number of "Account Unknown" permissions. I tried to remove these but there was some "inheritance" issue. So I highlighted the "Account Unknown" permission entry in question [not sure if this mattered, I don't think so]
and clicked on "Disable inheritance". All permissions entries disappeared except mine, ie, the one that is same as "Owner", and "WMPNetworkSvc".

WMPNetworkSvc permission had full access, but in the folder I was comparing permissions to, it only had read access. So I changed the permissions for it in the problem folder to "read". Hit ok etc and bingo could read files in the folder.

There were some other permissions entries too that disappeared when I Disabled inheritance:

    - Adminstrators

    - System

    - Account unknown but same as in folder I was comparing to.

    These all had full access.

So, Ownership is not necessarily the issue, or not the only issue.

I think the ownership was correct at the outset.

    Changes that I made were:

    - WMPNetworkSvc having full access being changed to only read permission,

the other permissions removed when I disabled inheritance

    - disabling of inheritance on my permission or the WMPNetworkSvc permission or both.

Now I only have to permissions:

    - me ["my name (MS account registered email address"] full access I am also administrator in user account type [Control Panel\User Accounts\User Accounts\Change Your Account Type]

    - WMPNetworkSvc read access.

  5. Folders are not read only. Read what the properties dialog says.

"Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" It does not matter what you do, the folder's properties will always show a filled in box next to read-only. It has been this way forever. If you look closely, it is NOT a check mark.

  7. Than you were not paying attention.

Your issue is the NTFS permissions, they are setup for the previous installation. You need to reset them for the new installation. Nothing to do with the read-only attribute.

  9. From Windows 7: (No matter what, the read-only checkbox will always display as such. Same applies to Windows 8 and 10.)

Read-only does not apply to folders. Period end of discussion. Your issue is the NTFS permissions as I said previously (Security tab).

  10. Lol wow you get mad fast if only you'd listen to what I'm saying instead of getting all pissy
My H: drive never had read only slightly filled in until win 10

And your not even telling me how to fix the issue even if it is ntfs issue, guess you just want your high post count
