Windows 10: Can't update past Windows 10 17763.1282 feature update

Hi folks.


When I try to do the feature update past the above version, my computer gives me the personalized settings not responding/black screen freeze.


I was able to finally load a desktop following the black screen after deleting the two registry keys that are suggested on multiple sites, but my computer still only loads task manager as an app and no other app will launch and none of the icons on my desktop will populate and the windows button doesn't pop up the menu, and the taskbar will only load an icon for my GeForce program and nothing else.



I have tried the following:


SFC/scan now when rebooting in safe mode


startup repair tool when booting in safe mode says that it can't repair


switch network connection. my computer doesn't have wifi so I tried unplugging ethernet cable and starting and that didn't work, however airplane mode is greyed out so I can't even select it


deleting registry keys as above there are two commonly suggested ones to delete. After doing this I was able to get to the desktop but it wouldn't load icons or respond. Even after rebooting from there it remains painfully slow


starting up with all devices disconnected


Ensuring all drivers are up to date with Driver Easy


Launching explorer task as admin from task manager task manager takes nearly half an hour to load and it hangs up indefinitely when trying this. Also, my memory and CPU usage never pass 10-20% throughout this so my computer remains painfully slow despite not using much resources


Task manager is very unresponsive despite low cpu usage.


The only things that respond quite quickly after the update is using the reboot button on my tower and the screen that comes up for options when I press CTRL ALT DEL. Any other action seems to take 10+ minutes or hang up indefinitely despite low MEM/CPU usage.


Any other tips/requests for info to help are appreciated. When I run my computer with the build version above, it is very responsive and I have just kept doing so but now windows is becoming persistent in telling me to update as this version apparently won't be supported for long.

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.

Well just noticed a pretty large one pop up coming in at 914MB, seems it makes some pretty serous updates.
