  1. Can't update Windows

    IIS Security: Request filtering
    Please expand Application Development Features

Ok, I'll wait for you to Clean Startup and the Hardware Ids for the Unknown device

I think after resolving IIS that you should unhide the KB3156421 update and see if anything changed - does it install?

If you don't know why or how IIS got configured, after noting which Application Development Features are enabled ... Turn off IIS (uncheck the parent box - it's a block now bc only parts are enabled)

It might be a good idea to scan your machine for malware (IIS was enabled somehow)
I don't know if there's any on your machine, I feel that a quick check is warranted.

Please run two quick Malware scanners.

AdwCleaner is a two step process. Scan then Clean

Click here to download AdwCleaner (author: Xplode)
--> save the application to your Desktop.

    • Right-click AdwCleaner.exe on your Desktop and select Run As Administrator to run the scanner with full privilege rights.
AdwCleaner is a standalone executable, there is no install.

    • Click on the Scan button.
      • AdwCleaner begins scanning your system. It might take some time to complete.

      • Review the detected objects grouped under each of the tabs.
--> If there is something you KNOW should NOT be cleaned, clear the checkbox
        Can't update Windows [IMG]
next to the object. If you're not sure about an object, paste the scan logfile (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) in a new post for a member to review and advise you.
Otherwise, go to the next step.

    • After the scan has finished and you have reviewed the objects to be cleaned, click on the Clean button.
      • Answer OK to the close all programs prompt, then follow the onscreen prompts.
      • Answer OK to the restart the computer prompt to complete the removal process.
The AdwCleaner log file is opened in your default Text editor when the machine has restarted.
Each time AdwCleaner runs, the log file number [#] is incremented, the highest number is the most recent. There are two log files, one for the scan (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) and one for the clean (AdwCleaner[C#].txt).
Paste the entire clean logfile (AdwCleaner[C#].txt) in your next post.
--> AdwCleaner logs are located in the C:\AdwCleaner folder if you need to reference them again

    Then follow this tutorial

    Hi,

Here is the hardware id for the unknown device:

    Can't update Windows [IMG]

    I did a clean install

I turn IIS off (.Net 4.6 was also checked)

    Can't update Windows [IMG]

Then, I showed the 1511 update and tried to install it, but the problem remains

I can perform the malware check later

    Thanks

Looks like that could be Dell ST Microelectronics DE351DL Motion Sensor.

I don't see your system specs filled in properly....Please click on My System Specs below your post and select Update Your System Spec. We need to be able to click on your system specs from any post in the thread and have that information handy.

You should go to the Dell support site and download the drivers for your particular system using your Dell Service Tag.

  4. Can't update Windows

Ok, I'll look up the HWid and post what I find.

You just did a Clean install?
or did you mean a Clean Startup?

I'm confused about Programs and Features ....
Here's my IIS settings in P&F - nothing is checked.

    Can't update Windows [IMG]

Our Winvers are different so the screens don't match one-to-one, but I confirmed that none of the settings on your machine are enabled on my machine.
What I want to confirm is that there are no check marks or dark boxes (part(s) of the feature are selected) in the check boxes next to IIS or IIS Hostable Web Core. The boxes for both IIS entries should be empty.

Ok, 1511 still won't install - still getting the rollback?
There might be more work to do re: IIS and C:\Users\DefaultAppPool

Might as well hide that update again

I think I'm still wating for (I might have missed it if you posted it)
    Command Prompt (Admin)
    reagentc /info

    New questions
Have you restarted the machine after changing IIS?
Do you still have the Other User issue that cropped up when I asked you to try a creating a new admin account?
    - Do any unrecognized users show up in User accounts?

I'd like to take a look at the profiles again:
    Launch Command Prompt (Admin)

    reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" /s > %TEMP%\profList.txt
    exit

Attach the profList.txt file in your C:\Users\username\Appdata\Local\Temp folder to a new post - thanks.

I took another look at the Other User screen you posted ...
Have you tried logging in as JAYBAYLIS\Michael

Do you have any kind of home network (computers and media or game devices) configured?

You are doing great providing all of the information I've requested. I know how frustrating it can be - not getting to a solution. I only have a few more tricks in my bag and will keep going until those are exhausted (we've come this far).

    One of those remaining tricks:

Make sure that the System Environment Variable for PATH is correct.
System Propeties > Advanced tab > Environment Variables.. button

Select Path in the lower pane (System Variables)
    Press Edit

    Can't update Windows [IMG]

If it looks the same (there might be additional paths on your machine)
Please post a screen shot and you can skip adding anything right now.

If the Path is empty - add a new variable as shown, in the order shown

    Can't update Windows [IMG]

To maake that easier, here's the text for the vars
add each line as a new var

    %SystemRoot%\system32
    %SystemRoot%
    %SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem
    %SystemRoot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v 1.0

I added the system specs and service tag. I went to the Dell site and there is a WIFI driver and a BIOS driver update available.

Thanks - we don't need your tag, and certainly not your serial number, so please remove those.

Do you see any drivers for any motion sensor for your system?

EDIT: I just looked and I don't see anything like that...but you do have some other updates to look at.

    Can't update Windows

    I did a clean startup

    Everything is unchecked under IIS:

    Can't update Windows [IMG]

Yes, 1511 is still rolling back, and I did hide it again

    reagentc /info was successful:

    Can't update Windows [IMG]

Yes, I restarted after changing IIS

I tried to log in with JBAYLIS\michael and it says the user name or password is incorrect, so I created another user, logged in, showed the 1511, tried to install it, but it rolled back again

My home network consists of a Linksys router

    proflist.txt file is attached

I had all the environment variables you did plus some others, so I deleted the extra ones

  9. Product Support | Dell US

Please add 32-bit to your system specs - thanks.

There are two updates for the motion sensor
1 under applications: ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver Driver Details | Dell US

1 under chipset: ST Microelectronics Free Fall Sensor Driver Driver Details | Dell US

This is not a big deal - it's basically to protect the drive during a fall - my box has a comparable sensor and it too is unknown device - I just never installed it.

So, in my opinion, it is not critical - others might disagree *Wink

The BIOS update has no fixes, but has a BIOS protection enhancement
Dell Latitude E5510 System BIOS Driver Details | Dell US

Neither seem worthwhile at this stage ... but I retain my right to change my mind *Wink

  10. -->That's what I thought you meant.

    -->Prefect!

-->Thanks - always good to know the current status

--> Check that off our list. It points to the C: partition

--> Many times a restart is the key to cementing changes. Thanks

-->IS the Other User still presented as a user login? I'm guessing yes bc you said you tried to log in as I requested.

-->What I was really asking is "Other than connecting to the Internet, do you have a home network that connects other computers or other devices such as media boxes, game boxes, or network printers to your computer?"

-->Thanks - no change from the last one. Uninstalling IIS did not affect that user.
There are 4 users in the
    This, I presume is yours -> C:\Users\jbaylis
These two are marked as new -> C:\Users\tpham & C:\Users\jkolchak
This is the presumed IIS account -> C:\Users\DefaultAppPool

    Do you recognize those accounts?
Do they appear in Settings > Accounts > Other accounts?

    -->Why?

  11. Here's where I'm heading
    - remove any and all extraneous accounts. This ties into John Wink's bad profileImagepath.
    - review outstanding information (just malware scans now I think)
    - recap and regroup
    - repair install

and finally the sure fire fix:
    - clean install
but we're not there yet ... we're getting close though.

  12. Sorry that sounded a bit harsh when I read it again.
As long as you have the path I provided, your machine should be fine. Some application might complain about a path - if that happens it can be fixed.

All in all, the many things you've been asked to do have been done without issue - can't complain about one minor oops.

  13. Can't update Windows

On the subject of user profiiles:

    Command Prompt (Admin)
    cd \users
    dir /a /s > %TEMP%\listUsers.txt
    exit

Please attach %TEMP%\listUsers.txt in a post.

I have a reg file to remove the two profiles with a x04 State (new account) but I want to know more about them before I post it for you.
    Do they exist in C:\Users?
What does Default contain and are the junctions correct

    lots of questions *Wink
still no answers on the issue

  14. Have an update on my error regarding install in place- upgrade. It may be due to the fact that I have temporarily an old pci-e card that is messing with the boot (both HD4000 and GTX560 trying to take over picture signal resulting in conflict and no boot, have to disable HD4000 or remove GTX). My error can be due to that instead of relating to the KB update itself. Have to remove the pci-e card and test with integrated GPU only.

  15. Thanks, let us know how your test turns out. There is some discussion on Reddit of the issue being caused by hardware - still inconclusive.
