Windows 10: Can't update Windows

No luck. Reinstalled W10 as an upgrade, but still could not install update KB315...(did not end up with W10 upgrade error). I have a feeling this a very complicated matter and every solution may be unique and apply to one user. Some have succeeded with reintstall upgrade, after that. Some have after removing nvidia drivers. I tried with iGPU after in place upgrade, but no better. Running out of ideas.

I was wondering, did we ever determine if any of the Anti-Telemetry programs have been used on this system?
Do we have a list of installed programs to look at?

 

I've used Spybot Anti-Beacon but uninstalled, no difference.

The repair install failed error was due to the fact that iGPU and GPU mixed graphics at startup, the setup was not able to boot resulting in that error. Repair upgrade done with only iGPU, but as said, no difference in KB update installation. Nvidia HW or SW did not affect it either.

 

Cumulative updates, update the system reserved partition prior to rebooting - there has to be enough space there for it to do it's thing.

 

I need a nitecap ... er recap from time to time.

There is a lot I don't know about this machine - the only hard report I asked to see is Speccy and I forget if that contains a list of installed pgms - it used to, but btwn my memory and chgs Piriform make ....

I've been meaning to revisit Speccy anyway - it should be in the recap.

There is no SysRes - everything is on C: (boot, system, active...). This is where I began thinking the issue lie (SysRes too small) but .. one chase led down one rabbit hole, another chase down a fox hole.

jmbtexas4 has been very gracious with time spent. I'm trying not to take the easy route of a Clean install. Besides being a glutton for punishment, I'd like to see if this effort helps John Wink (msft) solve the bigger issue with the KB

I don't know, but after resolving the user profile issues, I might consider asking jmbtexas4 to create a SysRes and move the boot to it. One thing after another at a time is the only way I know how to troubleshoot

I had a look at the Speccy upload, and didn't see a list of installed programs (but, I was on my phone, and that is very small, and difficult to look at).

Also, I have found that sometimes, the "some settings managed by your..." is a result of running an anti-telemetry program...that's why I asked.

 

Thanks, no list of installed pgms in Speccy - I think they trimmed it down (removed instaqlled pgms, wer, stuff like that).

Great, that msg on Time (some settings...) was another hting I wanted to check - first inclination was MS account, but that didn't feel right. I'll have to Google anti-telemetry SW - I'm sure someone made such a utiltiy.
I'm also thinking that it might have to do with IIS - this machine is confounding me - lots of things I can't completely warp my head around. The profile list has some really high numbers where a normal list suffix in the user group S-1-5-21 begins at -1001, this machine has numbers -1140, -1217, and -3212.

Please query the policy settings on your machine and attach both output files to a post:

One fix is to toggle Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data and Preview Builds: Allow Telemetry in Group Policy

A lot of people on many boards look and say "... but it's already Not Configured".
The key seems to be to enable it (Options=3-Full), then change it back to Not Configured

Sorry for the delay, I was swamped the last couple of days, and I'm heading out of town tomorrow for a day.

This is an old work computer. The company went out of business, and I was able to keep this laptop.

The tpham and jkolchak users are former coworkers, but I don't know why those users are "new" because they are years old.

I do see them in C: > Users, but they are not visible in Settings > Accounts > Other Users

I feel like I am behind on what you need after missing out on the last couple of pages.

Can we take it one step at a time?

To be honest, I think the best thing to do is a Clean install.

Use Belarc advisor to collect information about your current install, including software license keys.
You'll need the keys to reinstall any purchased software.

When the report opens in your browser, save it to your documents folder - that way it will get copied in the next step and be available later for you re-install.

When you reinstall your software, visit the vendor site to see if they offer up-to-date download, instead of using the out-of-date install disc. You might have to use the original disc and then update after the software is installed - not sure what you have on your machine.
As long as you have the license keys, you're good to go.
Backup your personal data
The easiest way is to copy your User Profile and any folders where you store things
(some people use folders other than the standard user folder locations: Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Video).

Read through the tutorial and ask questions if you need clarification. It is well written and covers all the bases, but some members miss something. The colored boxes have information that you don't want to skim over.

The most common mistake made is that the drive is not clean when Windows starts to install. You want your drive to look like this image on Step 12 C or 13 A from the tutorial (the drive size is not important, just the cleanliness of it *Wink)




Your machine only has the one HDD, so you won't run into the other common mistake of having more than one HDD connected.

Your machine is MBR based. so you also don't have to worry about UEFI considerations.

As long as you backup your data and follow the tutorial, you should have a good Clean install experience.

 

Ended up clean installing W10, everything fine after that. Something got broken in registry or elsewhere. Was not that big deal with fast PC, about 15 min + programs. Had backups of all settings and files.
