Windows 10: CAPS LOCK key remapped to Ctrl key

hey there, i accidentally remapped caps to ctrl key with 3rd party software and i cant turn it back for quite some time. When i type caps it tells me i press ctrl or LShift key.

Any help will be much appreciated

Remap Caps Lock to Ctrl in Windows 10 without administrator privileges?

Which would likely work great if I had admin rights on my machine. But I don't.

I also found a couple of links about remapping keys without admin rights in Windows 7. The suggested solution is to use the following:

(Save in a file with .reg extension, double-click to apply to the registry, and then reboot.)

This is the same as the first linked solution except for the key to edit; the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key can be edited without admin rights.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work on Windows 10. (It applies and creates the key, but even after reboot the Caps Lock key is caps lock, not ctrl.)

In regedit I see that under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout there are subfolders (subgroups?) for "Preload", "Substitutes", and "Toggle". It seems likely to me that putting something in "Substitutes" might be the way to do this for Windows 10 but I've no idea what to put, and there is no documentation I can find.

How can I remap Caps Lock to Ctrl in Windows 10 without admin rights?

 

registry key remapping doesn't work in all apps anymore

For years, I've used registry key remapping (via SharpKeys) to remap caps-lock to control.

However, for some reason this no longer works properly in all applications. In particular league-of-legends.

1) I remap caps-lock to control with sharp keys

2) I verify caps-lock is sending control in most windows apps (e.g. control-T makes a new browser tab in chrome)

3) I launch league of legends... in hotkey settings I can press "caps-lock + key" and it's intereted as "ctrl + key"

4) HOWEVER, when playing the actual game, I press "caps-lock + key" and it's ignored... like control isn't being sent

I don't understand what league could be doing to interpret keys in such a way that it ignores rebindings, but it's very very annoying.

When I rebind a key in windows, it should be rebound for everything, always.

 

Make caps lock untoggable?


Not sure if this is what you want but you could try this.
Install AutoHotKey as suggested in post #2 above and do one of the following:

Remap the caps lock key using the example shown on the AutoHotKey page linked in post #2 above. Change Ctrl to any key you want

Create a script that remaps the Capslock key to any key you want and only launch it when you play a game that needs the change
