Windows 10: Cast To Device feature and on-going issues with .MKV files

When casting a video file that is an MKV, Cast-To seems to have the best issues. It does not allow skipping ahead or backwards, audio quality is poorer or usually more quiet, will suspend itself after having paused for more than a few minutes or will randomly close itself halfway through the video.

Are these encoding issues? Whereas AVI and MP4 especially have none of the errors listed above.

What is causing these issues and how can it be remedied without conversion?

in my device cast to device is not playing mkv files.

unexpected device error is coming and my pc is upto date please solve my issue and i m using win 10 pro

 

Can't cast to device in windows 10 - only works with avi, mp4 not mkv

I've noticed the same thing, the message I get from the "cast to device" window is "unexpected device error".

Simply re-wrapping this file as an mp4 (which takes about 30 seconds, since the file has standard H.264

video and AAC audio so no re-encoding) allows the file to play.

Secondly, if I access the file from the WDTV live box by accessing the Windows 10 "media server"

(so I'm "pulling" the file, rather than "pushing" it from the "cast to" mechanism in Windows 10)

the MKV file plays just fine.

Thirdly, I can copy the same MKV file to my android phone and cast it to my device

from there and it also plays just fine.

Is it a restriction in the "cast to device" service that it does not support MKV files?

Somebody must know. I'd be interested in finding an answer to this.

• Do you get any error message when you try to cast the device?
• Does the issue happen when you don't use cast to device, I mean when you are online?
• Which device do you use to cast the content?

If the issue happens only when you cast the device, the issue can be that of the casting device. In that case I would request you to execute the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with hardware and devices. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with the Bluetooth adapter. Refer these steps:
