Windows 10: CD/DVD Drive issues...

I have installed Windows 10 recently on my laptop. It is an old Asus X45u laptop. If I remember it correctly, it is from around 2013.

Anyways, Windows does not recognize my DVD Drive. I know it works because it had Linux distros on it that could use just fine. Before that, Windows 7 had troubles because it wasn't installed properly in the machine and 8.1 could use it just fine (It came with 8.1, went to 7, then Linux and now 10).

It does open in case I press the button on the drive itself. But the File Explorer does not recognize any disc, nor does it show up listed as an option.

I tried to update drivers, but it is not listed in the Device Manager itself. I don't even have a "CD/DVD Drive" category or something to that effect. I tried refreshing, removing the drive and installing it again. No results.

I believe this is a problem with the age of the component. I have both a newer laptop without a drive that has the same listing in the Device Manager (without a DVD option because it never came in contact with one) and a newer laptop with a totally functional drive.

I really do not know how to proceed. I don't have any idea on how to install a driver withouth having the listing on Device Manager... And information on this machine is scarse to say the least.

I suggest you to update the drivers for CD/DVD drive by following the steps below and check if the issue persists.

Press Windows key + R and select Device Manager from the list.

Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.

Right click on the driver and select update driver software.

Follow the on-screen prompts and to update the driver.

CD/DVD drive is not correctly displayed

All the resolutions listed under Method 1 apply to the cases when CD/DVD drive is not recognized by Windows or other programs. Fortunately, my drive is recognized by Windows and other programs. I tried all the step-by-step resolutions listed, but did not
work. For some reason, my CD/DVD drive icon is not the right icon for the drive, and is for compact flash. Any idea?

I also reset my BIOS settings back to factory reset, but it did not help.

CD/DVD drive not recognized

First, try inserting a disc in the drive, does it spin up?
--Yes, I put a blank CD in, and it spins up.

A few other suggestions

Try uninstalling the device in Dev mgr, wait 2 or 3 minutes and if Windows doesn't cycle though hardware changes, right click any device and select Scan for Hardware changes.

--Yes, I've uninstalled it and waited. Tried this with the CD in. Nothing happened after a few minutes, so I did the Scan for Hardware changes. Still Unknown Device. I've even tried updating and grabbing the drivers off the HP site, updating those drivers didn't help. Tried the update drivers, didn't fix the issue.

You might also want to check File and Folder options in File Explorer
press the blue file menu,
select Change folder and Serach options
select the View tab
is show empty drives selected?

---This was hidden. I've unhidden it as in the screen shot of my folder options.

It would help members if you could post a screen shot of Dev mgr device properties (post the first 4 tabs)

If it is an unknown device -post the General tab and the Details.
On the Details tab, select Hardware IDs from the drop down box

I'm not sure if these suggestions will help. I had a similar issue with a CD drive on a Vista box, turned out to be a hardware issue on the Mobo. The optical drive is really controlled by a few settings (DVD, CD, Writer) and when it doesn't work, it is hard to diagnose.

If the device worked before (recently), it's a Win10 issue, and it might be version specific. There are known issues with AMD graphics drivers, this might extend to the chipset as well - those with Intel boards / CPUs can ignore this part. It's a guess anyway.

--Installed WIN 10 with this drive, it worked until 10 was installed.

If you're comfortable with hardware, you might try removing the optical drive from the box, restarting without it attached, and then shut down, reinstall the optical drive and start up the machine.

Follow instructions in the service manual for your device or on the mfr website.

---I'm okay with opening latops. I've opened this one 3 times, adding SSD HD and upgrading RAM. I'll be able to try this later on, Friday, probably. With it spinning up when a CD is inserted, I'm not sure this would help. I'd appreciate advice on this.
