Gingertech. If you are using the Windows 10 upgrade, and your motherboard supports SATA 3, then you must use a SATA 3 (Blue) cable, even though it is a SATA 2 device. I done this and hey presto-there it was.

  2. Folks,

I had a similar issue with Windows 10 not seeing the DVD drive, was fine in Windows 7. Followed the link to the registry add and it's perfect now so cheers for this. Still have a couple of other issues after my upgrade and I'll look elsewhere in the forum for a solution.

    cheers,

I ran the command as noted in a previous thread and now my Laptop boots up to a black screen. I tried to do a system restore for the last three dates and it doesn't work.

    reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

Is there a way to undo this?

  4. CD/DVD drive not recognized

I had a problem similar to the ones on this thread. After upgrading from win7 to win10, my DVD was totally invisible to win10. I did a chat with microsoft answer desk. It took 2 hours with them controlling my computer remotely but they finally fixed it. Here's how: They went into device manager and uninstalled the SATA driver and then did a full reboot. I believe the registry contained some bad info that caused win10 not to look at the DVD device even though it saw my other 3 sata devices (hard drives). By uninstalling the SATA itself, win10 was forced to totally reinstall it on boot, including all the attached devices. I hope this helps some others on this thread.

I have also recently upgraded to Windows 10 to check it out. To be honest I liked it, however for some reason it did not recognise my CD/DVD drive. DVD's would not play and the CD/ DVD and drive did not show up in the MY computer section or anywhere else. I'm not very computer savy but played around with it for a couple of hours/days but after a few days I went back to my good old Windows 7 software on my HP PC Pro. All works fine. Is there any very easy way I could get the new Windows 10 to work as it should? I have not added or changed anything else just upgraded. Some people have suggested that I add some code to the computer to sort it but others have told me that this could be a hack as a number of hackers are using this to hack into people like me who don't know too much about computer stuff. Surly MS must know about this is a problem and will issues a fix, wont they? Thanks

My desktop can't see my DVD drives after installing Windows 10
Here is what worked for me on the first attempt. Follow the instructions precisely.

Resolution 3: Manually fix corrupted registry entries

Note To use this method, you must be logged on to Windows as an administrator. If you need help verifying that you are an administrator, go to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/admin

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

This problem may be caused by two Windows registry entries that have become corrupted. To use Registry Editor to delete the corrupted Registry entries, follow these steps:
    • Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • Type regedit in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
    • In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    • In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.
    • On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    • When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    • In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, go to the next resolution.
    • On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    • When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    • Exit Registry Editor.
    • Restart the computer.

    CD/DVD drive not recognized

I really don't think it will go that far. I mean you can still get your floppy drive going if you want too.

    Try: command prompt as Admin.

    reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

    hit enter

    exit command prompt window
    reboot

I had same problem on 2 computers, both now fixed.*Smile*Biggrin

  11. I'm having the same issue:

I just bought a new PC because my Windows 7 PC crashed. Now I have Windows 10. My c/d drive doesn't show up when I open File Explorer and it doesn't open a window to give me options when I insert a cd. I have to tinker around for an hour and then, magically, it appears! I have no idea what or where I went or did to make that happen. I am frustrated beyond belief when I come to places like this that post pages of "solutions". Isn't there ONE solution to make my computer know there is an "e:" drive in there? Sometimes it seems like people are guessing, because the solutions don't work... or there are different causes for the same problem?

I am not very technically savvy, but I did manage to uninstall the driver and restart my PC, but that didn't help. I am not ready to start editing in the registry. And how do you know when someone instructs you to write a line that it's correct or that it's not posted with malicious intent? If Windows 10 is the greatest, why can't it just recognize a simple RW cd/dvd drive???
