Windows 10: Challenge Phrase when Pin entered incorrectly

This came from being asked for the Challenge Phrase to unlock the computer when I had entered the wrong Pin to log into Windows.


I cannot find a single legitimate answer to where this phrase is set or how to change it. Why is there no simple FAQ answer from Microsoft to where this is set or reset? There is plenty of information on changing your password, why it this setting such a secret?


There are ridiculous answers some from Volunteer Moderators about returning computer to factory settings and reinstalling windows that should be deleted from the forum as they are suggesting users to go to extremes for what should be an easy fix and not involve risking files or wasting time with these steps.


There are also links provided to various additional pages which have to relevance to the problem and seem to have been added in the hope that a scatter gun approach will help.

First, "Challenge Phrase" is a new approach taken by Microsoft to thwarting brute force attacks or cyber trespassers. This attack involves a simple process of trying all common or likely PIN codes over and over until the correct code is finally discovered.
When a PIN gets entered incorrectly four times in a row, users are sent to a different screen where they are requires to enter a specific phrase.

May I know what are you trying to do before the challenge phrase prompted?

And what do you mean by nothing happens? Did this mean you where directed to another windows?

Kindly give further details so I can suggest or give you a step by step procedure to fix this.

I don't know my challenge phrase

One of my friend entered my laptop pin incorrectly and now it is asking me for a challenge phrase. I remember my pin but there is no way I can go back and enter my pin to login to my laptop. I don't remember having a challenge phrase. Is there anyway I
can login using my pin again?

 

Challenge Phrase up everytime I take phone out of pocket

I always close all windows and touch the power button before putting phone in pocket, but 4 times out of five, the challenge phrase is up when I pull it out. And after I enter the challenge phrase, I have to enter the PIN. While I can imagine the phone
maybe getting "on" while in the pocket, I can't imagine that the PIN is being entered incorrectly enough times to require the challenge phrase. I've reset the phone several times to no avail. It will allow me to answer calls - that's good - but entering
that stupid challenge phrase is a pain.

Is there any way to change the frequency or modify the settings for it?
