Windows 10: change file extension to open by another program

Discus and support change file extension to open by another program in Windows 10 Customization to solve the problem; i have a weird issue that randomly .xls will opens default with excel citrix. after one-off manual change to open by excel using GUI, it will be fine....     i have a weird issue that randomly .xls will opens default with excel citrix. after one-off manual change to open by excel using GUI, it will be fine.


    how do i change it for all computers? i tried using command ftype Excel.Sheet.8="C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\excel.exe" "%1" but it wont change even after reboot.

    When you say that "Default Program Associations", are you referring to the list of default applications in default programs settings?



    I want you to be informed that all the file extensions is listed in the default program settings which is displayed under
    Associate a file type or protocol with a program.



    In default program list, all the programs or application will be listed. Then we can select each program as default program for opening a particular file.

    I suggest you to refer to the below steps to make default program for a particular file extension.

    1. Type "Control Panel" without the quotes in search box and click on it.

    2. Click on Programs.

    3. Then click on Default Programs and click on Choose Default for this Programs.

    4. Select .flv file from the list.

    Also you can try other steps to associate the a particular extenstion with the program.

    1. Type "Control Panel" without the quotes in search box and click on it.

    2. Click on Programs.

    3. Then click on Associate a file type or protocol with a program
    and search for .flv extension from the list.

    4. Click on .flv and then click on Change Program.

    How to change a file's open with program to when i first downloaded it


    basically for the exact situation here, i downloaded a sky\rim mod and i accidentally put it so it would open the file with windows photo viewer from what i see the files extension is .dds but when i do as you say, i don't see a option that is check marked for a extension such as dds, is it possible for someone to help me via teamviewer? if not then does this recent information change the steps in anyway?

    File Extension Not Listed, Open With Not Available, Program Not Listed But Has Some Extensions Listed and Working

    Attempting to open a wxmaxima file with extension .wxmx I find there is no association.

    Right clicking doesn't offer "open with".

    Start -> Default Programs -> Set your default programs doesn't list wxmaxima.

    Start -> Default Programs -> Set Associations doesn't list the .wxmx file extension but .wxm is listed as associated with wxmaxima, and files with that extension do open to wxmaxima.

    Searching the registry for "wxmx" comes up with some hits. For instance:

    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3479060128-2734603307-3620966193-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.wxmx\OpenWithList
