Change or Remove Compression Blue Arrows on Icons in Windows 10

Hello Snipe, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

The Shell Icons key is not there by default, and will need to be added using the note box under step 5A.

Hmm, ok. Go ahead and post a screenshot showing your registry settings for this to see if anything may be wrong.

Change or Remove Compression Blue Arrows on Icons in Windows 10

So, I ended up just decompressing my HDD and now all of the white pages / blue arrows are gone. I've got more than enough space so decompressing was no biggie. Here's the picture of my registry just for the record.

    Drak,

I don't see anything wrong with your registry setting for this, so I'm not sure why the .ico didn't display properly for you.

I'm glad you got it sorted by decompressing though.

I am lost. I do not have Shell Icons either. Here is the instruction under 5a.

If you do not have the 179 string value, then right click or press and hold on an empty area in the right pane of the Shell Icons key, click/tap on New, click/tap on String Value, type 179 for the name, and press Enter

If I do not have the Shell Icon Folder how do I right click in the empty area? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just dont understand how to create the Shell Icon Folder. Thanks.

Sorry, I missed that. So after I create the folder I just copy what is in step 3 for the value? Thanks.

Well, technically in step 5 after creating the "Shell Icons" key, but yes. *Smile

  10. I am having the exact same problem the previous poster in this thread was having. The transparent icon appears as a white document instead of being invisible like it should. I'm using 64-bit Windows 10. Interestingly, if I use a 32-bit explorer replacement, the transparent icon appears invisible as intended. It seems this problem is exclusive to 64-bit.

Hello winderpExpress, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

It still works in my 64-bit Windows 10.

Double check to make sure that you didn't miss any of the instructions in the steps to rule that out. If you haven't already, move the .ico file In your System32 folder, and make sure the registry is pointing there to see if that helps.

Does the downloaded .ico file itself show as transparent when viewing it?

  12. Yes, it's transparent when viewed in MS Paint. I put the file in System32. It works with a 32-bit file explorer, so the problem is not my settings.

I just tried to make my own version of the transparent icon file by making a transparent 16x16 PNG in photoshop and converting it to an icon, but I got the same result. So the problem is not the file either.

Running explorer as administrator does not make a difference.

  14. It's going to be somewhat difficult to revert .ico to the default Photos app, as I uninstalled it along with almost every other stock Windows 10 app, using the PowerShell method. At the moment, it opens in MS Paint. I think I will just leave the blue arrows in place for 64-bit programs and only use the transparent one on 32-bit programs.

That may be why the icon is not showing as it normally should.
