Windows 10: Change or Remove Compression Blue Arrows on Icons in Windows 10

I created the folder and typed in the values. The blue arrows are gone but what appears to be a blank sheet has taken its place.

Did you use the transparent.ico file provided by the tutorial, and moved it into your System32 folder?

 

I downloaded it, am I supposed to open it or just move it? It doesnt look like a folder or anything , it just says transparent 16kb. Im not computer savvy so I am just trying to make sure I dont mess anything up.

 

Yeah, you'll need to move the downloaded transparent.ico file to your "C:\Windows\System32" folder, and use the same path in the registry as the screenshot in the tutorial at step 5B. *Smile

 

Thanks Brink but I must be doing something wrong. I created the Shell Icon folder, typed in the path %windir%\System32\transparent.ico moved the downloaded file transparent to the System32 folder and still have the blank page that replaced the arrows. Ill just forget it so I want be troubling you,thanks.

 

If you like, restart the PC to see if it may get applied afterwards.

Like a few in this thread, I could not get this solution to work. What would show up instead of the blue arrows was a small black rectangle in the upper right corner of every single icon for a compressed file. I finally figured out what the problem was -- the image file itself. For some reason it did not work on my system, and I found another one ("empty.ico") that did.

I noticed two differences between empty.ico and transparent.ico: (1) Different resolutions. The one that worked for me is 24 x 24, whereas the one attached to the OP is 48 x 48. (2) Viewing the icons in Windows Explorer with the folder view option set to "Details," there is a small black square showing for transparent.ico while the space is totally blank/transparent for empty.ico.

I am running a 64-bit system and my display is only 1366 x 768, but I have no clue why empty.ico works and transparent.ico doesn't. I think I got empty.ico from running one of the shortcut fixes on the web, but I can't remember exactly which one. I think it was the Ultimate Windows Tweaker from thewindowsclub.com -- but am not sure.

Yes, I did. Same story as others: I got a small white square, so I wondered if the size of the icon got anything to do with it.

 

Did you move it to your System32 folder?

Yes, I am trying at this very moment to create an icon with an icon-editor ( IcoFx ) . I try 24x24 pixels
I did copy the previous icon into Windows\System32, so that should be okay.

 

Nope, did not work, but I am not sure if I did it right. I opened a new icon in icofc and the program came up with the choice of the format. I choosed 24x24.
After that I instantly saved it , without editing anything, because I wanted a transparant icon. Is that the right way?
