No, that option is not available. What I tried was to examine other icons and check their sizes.
The steam-icon was 32x32 2 bits so I made a icon from that size, but it did not work. That means the problem is not the size.
What it is? I don't know. Maybe the screen resolution? It works for you, so what is the resolution of your PC? Maybe I should change that. My screen is 1920x1080.

 

Screen resolution wouldn't have any affect on it.

The Transparent.ico file is 48x48 pixels. Did you unblock this file before moving it into your System32 folder?

 

I did not, because I don't know how to unblock files. I do not even know what it is...

 

In that case, delete your current one, download a new copy of the Transparent.ico file to your desktop, unblock it, then move it to System32 to see if that may help. In addition, double check the registry to make sure the path to the .ico file is correct.

Shell Icons is missing for me in the registry for some reason and I cannot carry out the changes you illustrate. Any idea why its missing and how I could proceed? I just reinstalled windows 10 and nearly all my files and folders have the blue compression arrows. Driving me insane. Thanks

Did you see this blue note box under number 3?



Note If you do not have the Shell Icons key, then right click or press and hold on the Explorer key, click/tap on New, click/tap on Key, type Shell Icons for the name, and press Enter.

Hi, I followed the steps, using the transparent.ico downloaded from here, but my icon appears as black. Any ideas on how to resolve this? I have already unblocked the file and saved it in System32 folder.

(The ico file only appears transparent instead of black when not in small view)

As a test, restart the computer to see if that may help.

 

Still black icons.. I noticed my computer seem to display icons that are mostly transparent as black when they are in small view mode. I think I would rather go back to the blue arrows then stay with black squares sigh.

 

As a test, do you still have the black icons when using any other different icon than the transparent.ico? Perhaps one from imageres.dll or shell32.dll as a test.
