I can put an icon on my desktop to open settings - update windows. How do I put an icon on the desktop that will actually check for updates?

"Check Online for updates from Microsoft Update" won't remain checked

This is by design on domain-joined machines. The option only takes affect for the current inquiry.

  3. "Check Online for updates from Microsoft Update" won't remain checked

    Start

    Settings

    Windows Update

There is a check box that says "Check online for updates from Microsoft update." that box won't say checked on my machine.

I am not 100% sure it matters. It used to be Microsoft Update was responsible for Office updates, but with Office 365, it seems Office takes care of itself.

I suppose Windows Update takes care of everything that came with Windows 10, so it is possible that I have nothing that needs Microsoft Update and that is why it won't stay checked, but I am asking anyway to ensure I always have the latest patches in place.

  5. An alternative: save the following into a .cmd file and put it onto the desktop.

    C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:windowsupdate-action

That isn't an alternative. It is exactly the same pal.

    Brink said: %windir%\explorer.exe ms-settings:windowsupdate-action

    You said: C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:windowsupdate-action

If you are suggesting you could use the exact same thing as a .bat or .cmd or .ps1 or .psm or .lnk then you could.

It is the ms-settings:windowsupdate-action that is interesting wherever you put it.

  7. Sorry for having misused the word 'alternative', as my English is terribly poor.
The following is not an alternative, but it works in a VBS file without a command window appearing.

    Createobject("wscript.shell").run("ms-settings:windowsupdate-action") , 0
