    chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f

Thanks for the replies, i'll try and get onto this tonight if i have time, of not it'll be Thurs.
do i fire up tht log collector then run stuff and collect the logs after? any idea roughly how long the scans take? if it's a multi-hour thing i'll probably have to wait till the weekend.

Is the one partition failing just one of those mechanical things, or could the whole SSD be one the way out? the other partitions seemed ok, one SSD util i downloaded said it was good, crystal said there were warnings w/ somethings about a pending sector count which i don't understand.
the annoying thing is, i've not been doing much on that puter at all, certainly not written anything to the drive/partition that failed, so i don't know why it's gone belly-up.

    cheers

In post #7, Guru Navy Lt. Commander had suggested MiniTool Power Data Recovery and the OP seal007 had in his post #9 reported "I have recovered data with this Mini Tool *Biggrin" Again in the Fix: chkdsk an unspecified error occurred - Appuals.com suggested by Pro zbook (post #12), MiniTool Power Data Recovery is suggested. So you may try that. What I don't know however is how seal007 managed since the free version can recover only 1GB of data.

Post the screenshots asked for in post #13. We shall then proceed with TestDisk - freeware - and try to recover data with it if possible first. If only the volume boot sector is corrupt, TestDisk can repair it and restore the drive partition. If MFT is corrupt, even TestDisk will not be able to repair it and recover the data and in that case only we need to go in for a commercial software like GetdataBack Simple ($69) and Active @ File recovery ( $29)

Just to make yourself happy, try GetDataback Simple Data Recovery Software Products - Runtime Software Products, scan your drive , select the RAW partition if shown and explore. Does it show all your folders and files? You can even open the files and check the integrity. If the result is positive then we shall go with TestDisk to recover the data. If it fails, then active@ file recovery ($29). If you want you can instead of GetDataback try active@file recovery http://www.file-recovery.com/, since it is the one which you will finally be buying if MFT is corrupted and TestDisk fails to repair it.

If TestDisk finds that both volume boot sector as well as MFT are fine, then running Checkdisk with /f /v /r /x parameters has been found to restore the partition in most cases. Note: This should be done only on that specific condition as reported by TestDisk. ( I wouldn't run it straightaway in any case unless TestDisk confirms VBR and MFT are OK)

    chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f

Okay, ran the bits and pieces.
    Drive manager:
chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f [IMG]

    Minitool:

chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f [IMG]

both correctly show the two SSDs i have fitted.

as for the scans zbook asked for:
    health:

chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f [IMG]

    stats:

chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f [IMG]

    and error scan:

chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f [IMG]

was expecting a lot more red in that scan but although there's only two blocks, it was apparently the only two needed to cabbage the partition!

    cheers

yeah, haven't run any repairs or anything. no great hurry. i don't think there's anything vital on that drive to be honest, but i'll like it back working if only to save spending money on a new one.
    cheers

Haven't gone to sleep yet, was grappling with my wife's iphone 5s problem and I don't know anything about iphone *Biggrin. Her mobile was not ringing and finally I found that the ringer switch on the left was in a silence position. I had to do some research to find out what that switch was, for she couldn't tell me what it is for and got a bigtime shout for that*Smile. I don't know how she is going to manage her Windows 10 HP laptop. Again though I set it up for her when received, I do not know much about Windows 10 *Biggrin except that it is not as easy dealing with it as Windows 7. Learning more about it here *Biggrin.

Back to the topic, I am open to what zbook has to say on the screenshots he had requested. ( OP has a 500GB SDD ??????. I doubt it. It may be a HDD and it had an OS on it earlier. OP to confirm) From what I guess the bad sectors may be in the MFT region corrupting it. ASAP the OP should backup all accessible data on the drive before that SSD shuts shop and SSDs can shut shop at the slightest fault detection unlike HDDs . This should be his first priority before trying any repairs or recovering data from the RAW partition. In fact until he is ready to copy all accessible data in the other partitions he should disconnect and keep the SSD under rest and not running.

Once he confirms that he has done that backup ,we can run TestDisk and check whether we can recover the data in the RAW partition if the OP so desires. If indeed TestDisk finds MFT corrupted and data not recoverable by it only commercial software as already indicated. Minimum cost USD 29 for active@file recovery. So OP has to decide and let me know. My time is always available to assist.

    See post #12:
    log collector v2-beta06.zip
The log collector should collect the logs in < 10 minutes.
Please post a zip into the thread for troubleshooting.

Your 500GB drive is indeed a HDD and not SSD. It is a Western Digital Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal HDD (as seen by HDD Tune) . Since the bad sectors have started showing up, it will no longer be a drive to be relied upon. So

    1. as advised earlier, backup all accessible data that you may not want to lose first .

    2. Run active@ file recovery and if it shows all your folders and files in the RAW partition, check whether you have any important data that you may want to recover. If yes, then we shall try TestDisk . If due to MFT corruption TestDisk is unable to recover the data, depending upon how critical and important that data is, you may choose to buy active@ file recovery then.

    3. I am not sure what the log collector recommended by zbook does and how it is going to help your case beyond what we know already. From my side I would recommend the manufacturer's Diagnostic tool Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows. If it can repair your drive fine. If not jettison the drive..

Software and Firmware Downloads | WD Support

Testing a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows: https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebas...er.aspx?ID=940

Edit: OK, I understand that the Ten forums DM log collector provides needed information about your system and dump files for better help with Windows 10 BSOD issue. Your case is not a BSOD issue . So how relevant it is in this issue only zbook has to tell. His HDTune request however gave me some information that yours is not an SSD but a WD HDD with bad sectors, that bad sector not being the first sector of the RAW partition where the Volume Boot Record is present. So VBR is likely to be OK and that leaves the MFT corruption as suspect for the checkdisk error and the partition turning RAW. I would still verify with TestDisk to confirm.

cheers for the info. apologies for the confusion over the SSD/HDD thing.
i believe there is an issue w/ the MFT; i got an error on, iirc, Recuva that mentioned the MFT. when i tried a deep scan of files rather than the normal scan it seemed to find something but it was taking forever so i quit the scan
i'll try the utils you mention and then, as suggested, bin the drive. just out of curiosity, given your comments about SSDs shutting up shop, would you recommend an SSD or HDD for the replacement?
thanks again for the assists so far chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f :)

SSD is the better option for faster boot. External hard drives and the cloud can be used for extra storage.

Google SSD vs HDD and you will get a lot of information. Take your pick. Individual opinions and preferences may vary. ( I do not have any SSD *Smile)

An SSD often does not give much warning before it fails. Electronic components don’t begin to grind or buzz as they grow older. They work – and then they don’t. It is all or none. TRIM in consumer SSDs will aggressively delete all data at the slightest defect. An aggressive backup schedule is imperative. That is what I know from my readings.

One author opines that SSDs don’t appear to be much more reliable than mechanical hard drives (for their first few years of life, at least) and they also are difficult and expensive to recover data from.

just an update, took a while to get a new HDD and some spare time. ran a few of the things above, nothing seemed to help restore/repair the MFT. one of the recovery things managed to scan the drive and i got a list of what was on there, nothing too desperate so i just left it, now have a new WB Blue in.
just wanted to say thanks again for the help and the advice, guys - much appreciated chkdsk gives error code - 726173642e637878 25f :)
