  1. Choose where the System Partition is created.

I'm having issues with Windows Server 2016 installing the system partition on the incorrect drive however, it's just like windows 10 in this regard.

There are no directly attached storage devices other than the DVD drive. There are 2 raid controllers. The first raid controller has 4 drives and 2 logical raid 1 drives. The second has 8 drives and 3 logical drives. 1 10TB raid 5 and 2 120 gig raid 1. Every time I install SVR 2016 on one of the 120Gig Raid 1 drives, it puts the system reserved on the 10 gig logical drive, breaking it into an 7.9TB and 1.99TB with the 500MB partition. I've wiped and reinstalled several times.

I'm trying to get the system reserved drive on the same drive as the OS. In the setup screen disk 1 is the 500gig logical, disk 2 is the 10TB, disk 3 is the 300 Gig, disk 4 and 5 are 120 gig (this is not the order I created the Logical drives in the Controller. The 500 and 300 are on one controller but the 10TB sits between them in the selection screen). No matter what I do, it always chooses disk 2 to build the 500mb System Reserved partition.

There is no data on any of the drives.

I've tried creating partitions in the setup window. I've tried creating and formatting partitions in windows after the install but every time it puts the System Reserved on the large 10TB drive and that prevents me from making it a GPT disk and only allows 2TB to be used and the rest is unavailable. I've tried creating a 500mb partition on the desired drive and it still chooses the wrong drive.

How can I make it choose the right drive short of wiping out the raid arrays and having just 1 logical drive? I could do this but of course it takes forever to initialize the 10TB and then format it in the 64K container size I need for the storage media.

    :)

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

Recovery Partition vs System Reserved Partition

Thanks for all the info guys.

Both original & target SSD's are listed as MBR as opposed to UEFI. I may have created a partition unknowingly in getting the original/new unformatted drive recognized, but I don't recall taking any steps that Windows did not step me through.

Not that an upgrade to WIN 10 Pro is contemplated, but I suspect that having no System Reserved partition will not allow that to happen, after seeing how the original WIN 10 upgrade created a problem for some WIN 7 users that had a smaller 100mb vs 500mb System Reserved partition.

how to create partition in windows 10

    hey,

To create a partition from unpartitioned space follow these steps:

    • Right click This PC and select Manage
    • Open Disk Management
    • Select the disk from which you want to make a partition.
    • Right click the Un-partitioned space in the bottom pane and select new Simple volume.
    • Enter the size and click next and you are done.
    Hope this helps.
