Windows 10: Chrome crashes for HomeDepot, Delta on HP Spectre x360 or Lenovo Yoga Convertibles

When accessing some commerce sites (HomeDepot.com, Delta.com among others) from Chrome, Chrome immediately crashes entirely - the whole browser crashes, not just the affected tab. The problem affects mainly the HP Spectre x360 and Lenovo Yoga lines, although there are a few mentions of the MicroSoft Surface and other laptop/tablet convertibles. Chrome has no problem reaching these sites from other laptop hardware platforms.


The problem has been isolated to the HID Collection V2 sensors. If these are disabled (rotation and ambient light) there is some minor loss of functionality, but the sites do not crash.


The crash has been tracked to a double free in Windows sensorsAPI from JavaScript. Chrome was able to ameliorate the problem with Chrome 71, but it still persists for many users. Chrome is unable to fix the problem because the root cause is internal to the Windows API. Edge can open the sites OK, but there's something related to these specific hardware sensors (Spectre x360, Yoga) that is causing Chrome to crash in the sensorAPI.


The same problem was fixed by the Windows update to 1803 for the HP Elite x2 1012 G1, but persists with 1803 and 1809 for the Spectre x360 and Lenovo Yoga.


Details can be seen in Chrome bug CR789344. The problem was first reported 11/24/17 for Windows 1511 and persists through 1809. I'm a Chrome community volunteer, with over a year's notes on this problem and can provide additional pointers. There are workarounds to avoid the problem, but these are tedious and cumbersome. The root problem needs to be resolved by Microsoft.


Let me know if you've seen other reports of this problem, or have any tips on how to escalate it at Microsoft. If you are aware of efforts or problem reports by HP or Lenovo to address this Chrome crash at commerce sites, also please let me know.

HP Introduces the Spectre x360 Convertible PC

HP today announced the HP Spectre x360, a 13.3 inch convertible PC that delivers an ultra-thin design, the quality customers expect, and performance to get things done.

x360 Design and Experience for Maximum Versatility
The HP Spectre x360 is designed with an all CNC aluminum chassis and is 15.9 millimeters in height and weighs 3.3 pounds. The device features polished metal on the sides that is achieved using a single machined cut, giving it a jewelry-like finish in a natural silver color.

With the HP Spectre x360, customers get an ultra-thin PC with additional versatility to experience multiple modes in one device. Users can transition seamlessly from notebook mode for work, stand mode for viewing entertainment, tent mode for touchscreen entertainment, or tablet mode for on the go. To ensure the display glides smoothly and stays in place where a user wants it, the HP Spectre x360 has innovative new hinges that contain a set of three spiral gears for synchronized and precise movement. To give customers the battery life they expect, the HP Spectre x360 features a 56-watt hour battery that precisely fits into the CNC aluminum body. Next, HP looked at the biggest driver of battery drain -- the high-resolution touch display. The touch panel on the HP Spectre x360 is optically bonded to the display, increasing brightness and pulling each pixel up to the surface of the display. On models with the Quad HD display, the HP Spectre x360 takes advantage of Panel Self Refresh (PSR) technology which holds images on the screen to allow portions of the PC to power down when nothing on-screen is moving. As a result of these and other focus areas, the HP Spectre x360 delivers up to 12.5 hours of battery life.

HP improved Wi-Fi reliability and performance in the HP Spectre x360 for home, work and on the go. Facebook.com not loading properly on Windows 10/HP Spectre x360 Convertible

For the past week/10 days, facebook.com is not loading properly on my HP Spectre x360 Convertible laptop running Windows 10. My browser is Chrome (latest). Not sure if this is a laptop issue or if Zuckerberg and Co. is 'gently nudging' me to install the
app.

Any suggestions welcome.
