    Thanks for that.
I was going to use GPTgen initially, however the Macrium technique seemed less complicated.. Happy to get everyone's opinions.

I have successfully converted my BIOS disk to UEFI using Macrium without losing any data!!! I am very pleased about this. I do have some questions:
1.Why are my partitions still marked as NTFS, while my system partition is marked EFI?
2.My boot time is now much slower than before. The image I restored was from immediately before the conversion. Is there some tweaking I need to do to this GPT?
    thanks

That is not a standard GPT disk structure , I think you reimaged the WHOLE DRIVE , not just C:\ after the Conversion

Install Minitool Partition Wizard 9 Free and lets see what it sees ....... it will show the hidden MSR partition too if you are GPT.

I just noticed that changing to UEFI turned on "enable fast boot" where previously I had it turned off. I tried disabling it, and I believe the boot was a little faster.

been a while, since we started..... was it a Windows 8 computer previously ? it is showing a 128mb MSR (Other) Partition which was the Standard Win.8/8.1 size. So I think you Converted the Disk and then reimaged the Whole Drive instead of just C: partition from the Old Backup image. And in your Case the E: and F: drives too , ie your Data Partitions.

    Windows 10 normally has

    450mb Recovery
    100mb EFI (System)
    16mb MSR (Other)
    XXX GB C:\ Drive

    you also would have
    110.10 GB E:
    114.07 GB F:

BTW you CDRom does not need to be D:\ I usually make mine Z:\ so my HDDs are c.d.e.f.g etc , you can change the letter in MTPW or Disk management , however if you change letter it could effect programs that start off CD though there are not many of those now.....
If you have program installed on E; and F: then they would need reinstalling if you change those Drive letters to D: and E: but if they are just Data storage (Pic/Docs etc) then it won't matter .

***Edit ....I thought you wanted a Clean Win10 Install of AU so why did you restore from a Backup?

yes, I did want a clean boot, but also wanted to keep my data and programs. And so, I installed the anniversary update first, imaged the drive with Macrium, converted to uefi, then rewrote the drive with the image.

clean install with anniversary update & disk conversion BIOS to UEFI

Ahhhh , you can't have Both *Smile you want the whole Cake methinks *Smile

either you want a Clean install of Win10 OR you don't want to reinstall your Programs , and so use the Image .......

You can Clean install win10 to get the correct GPT Partitions on the Drive and then with the Rescue Disk restore just C: E: and F: so you will have the Correct Win10 Partitions AND your Old Programs ,

but that wont give you a Clean install of AU , you will have the old Win8 upgraded to win10 Windows .

    Yes, I want it all!
But if that's not possible, at least I know now how to convert a disk, and what would be involved in a proper clean install. Thanks again for all your help.

you can reinstall Win10 from a USB or DVD and get the proper GPT Partitions , but you must delete all partitions during win10 Setup till it says everything is Unallocated , then hit Next and it will make the correct partitions for you. And Then Clean install Win 10 for you.

You then need to reinstall any Programs you use regularly, and set up your email etc ...the computer will generally perform better after doing such , especially if it has been a few years ....

You can however , also use the Macrium Rescue disk to delete the new windows installation on C:\ Drive and replace it with your Image of C:\ E:\ and F:\ Drives .

If E and F are just data back ups you can also mount the Image in Macrium and just Copy any file you want back to a new Folder on the New Larger C:\ Drive too. (Not Programs , just things like Documents+pics etc .... Programs need to be installed properly so they register in Windows etc)
