I have a 500GB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSD (boot drive) that I want to replace with a higher capacity M.2 card. The issue is what hardware to use to clone the old drive to the new one. My mobo has one M.2 slot for SSD's so I want to use an external adapter for one of the M.2 cards. If you have solved this issue for your desktop or laptop I would like your advice on what extra hardware you needed during the cloning.

Remember please that I am dealing with PCIe NVMe drives ONLY. NO Sata is involved except for the connecting cable from the desktop to an adapter. I am experienced with cloning SATA III drives but cloning NVMe is a little new to me.

Computer: Dell XPS 8920, 32GB ram.

Present SSD: KXG50ZNV512G NVMe Toshiba 512GB

New SSD: CT13049074 Crucial P1 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD 1TB (or 2TB if available soon) or similar storage device.

    :)

Migrating Windows 10 from m.2 sata to new pcie nvme ssd

    Hello all,

I'm going to upgrade my current m.2 sata 128gb to a m.2 pcie nvme 480gb and have questions about migrating Windows over. From my understanding since i have a laptop and cant connect both drives at the same time and pcie nvme isnt supported externally I was
going to try and create a restore disk of my current drive and then image it to my new drive. Will this work?

Again my process will be, create rescue disk and image to usb, power down and swap drives, enable usb boot to my usb and power on, run the rescue disk and image to my new pcie nvme ssd.

Does anyone see problems with this? Do I need a large usb or will 32gb work for a 128gb ssd?

  3. Western Digital Black pcie nvme m2 ssd support in Windows 7 install

Hi, am trying to install a fresh copy of Windows 7 x64 onto a new build desktop that has a WD Black pcie nvme m2 ssd. From digging around online I've found that normally this drive is easily installed on Windows 8 and above machines without any hassle
but of course Windows 7 doesn't natively support them. There must be a work around to add drivers into the install USB to get round this??

New Dell PowerEdge R920 Server Equipped with Samsung NVMe PCIe SSD

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that its 1.6 terabyte (TB) NVMe (non-volatile memory express) solid state drive is featured in the new Dell PowerEdge R920 server. Together, Samsung and Dell are the first in the world to ship PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) SSDs using an NVMe protocol, enabling customers to get results faster.

"We have been working closely with Dell to optimize the storage capabilities of the PowerEdge R920, and believe that our NVMe PCIe SSD provides the best enterprise storage solution, offering ultra-low latency and surpassing the IOPS (input/output operations per second) performance of currently available SSDs," said Jim Elliott, corporate vice president, memory and SSD marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. "Samsung will continue to take the initiative in accelerating growth of the NVMe PCIe SSD market for green IT investment by providing NVMe PCIe solutions with high performance, density and scalability."

"Dell has long been a leader in driving industry interoperability standards, and by collaborating with Samsung to deliver Flash NVMe PCIe SSDs in the PowerEdge R920 we're improving storage latency and reducing response time, making it faster for customers to deliver business results," said Brian Payne, executive director, Server Solutions, Dell. "The Dell PowerEdge R920 is not only our fastest performing server to date but the first in the industry to ship with NVMe PCIe SSDs. This is an important milestone for the NVMe community and we expect it will help facilitate the widespread use of NVMe PCIe SSDs."

Samsung NVMe PCIe SSDs, which can write random data in 25 microseconds, markedly increase the performance of servers, such as those used for big data tasks, and are significantly faster than disk-based arrays in high performance computing applications.

The 1.6 TB, 2.5 inch, SFF-8639 NVMe PCIe SSD provides a sequential read speed of 3,000 megabytes per second, while being able to process random read data at up to 750,000 IOPS (input output operations per second), which is more than three times as fast as conventional high-end SAS 12 Gbps SSD storage options.

Samsung's 1.6 TB NVMe PCIe SSD also processes 25 percent more IOPS per watt than 12 Gbps SAS SSDs. In addition, its "power loss protection" capability ensures that data issued by the host system can be written to storage media without any data loss in the event of a sudden power failure.

Well suited for enterprise applications, the drive delivers an extended endurance of up to seven drive writes per day (DWPD) for five years, meets the PCIe 3.0 interface standard, and is available in densities of 400 GB, 800 GB and 1,600 GB.

The Dell PowerEdge R920 with Flash NVMe PCIe SSDs is now available worldwide.
