  1. Cloning old system drive on sata SSD to a nvme SSD on a new rig.

Long story short, I need to clone the content of my old machine's sata SSD into my new machine's nvme SSD so I can continue using my current installation without losing my software, settings, personal files etc.

I have a clone of my drive on another SSD at the moment for backup if this fails and I'm forced to do a clean install, which I really don't want to do.

I've read in the past that some people have had problems getting nvme SSDs to get recognized by the BIOS or Windows due to some drivers missing. And haven't been able to even install Windows.

    Should I (assuming this works)

    A. Plug the nvme and sata ssd on the new machine and just use Macrium, Aoei, EaseUS or similar from bootable USB-stick and just clone the drive? Will Windows even be able to boot from the nvme after the cloning without proper drivers?

    B. Use said program and use the sata SSD as a source for dissimilar hardware restore (mainly due to new mobo and CPU)? Again, would Windows be able to boot?

I've googled this quite a bit but majority of the results I get are either for cloning sata SSD to nvme SSD, or moving Windows10 installation on sata SSD to dissimilar hardware but still using sata SSD.

  2. Clone present nvme pcie ssd to replacement nvme pcie ssd?

I have a 500GB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSD (boot drive) that I want to replace with a higher capacity M.2 card.

Where do I put the new SSD during the NVMe to NVMe cloning process? My mobo only has one M.2 slot for NVMe SSD's so do I want to use an external adapter for one of the M.2 cards? If so, do you have a recommendation?

If you have solved this issue for your desktop or laptop I would like your advice on if and what extra hardware you needed during the cloning.

please remember that I am dealing with PCIe NVMe drives ONLY. NO Sata is involved except possibly for a connecting cable from the desktop to an adapter. I am experienced with cloning SATA III drives but cloning NVMe is a little
    new to me.

Computer: Dell XPS 8920, 32GB ram.

Present SSD: KXG50ZNV512G NVMe Toshiba 512GB

New SSD: CT13049074 Crucial P1 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD 1TB (or 2TB if available soon) or similar storage device.

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, version 1809.

  3. Unable to Boot to Windows 10 after Cloning old SSD to new SSD

    Hi,

I'm not using the SATA ports. I'm using M.2 with the SSD, and the external SSD is connected to my PC using USB. My MB only has only one M.2 socket, so I can only plug in one SSD at a time. (I bought a wrong adapter that doesn't work with NVMe) So I cloned
my old SSD to an external SSD (Samsung M3 Portable SSD), and then swapped the old one, cloned the external SSD to my new SSD.

I tried AOMEI too, but the free version does not come with disk clone functions. I would probably try Macrium Reflect as suggested above. Thank you!

Unable to Boot to Windows 10 after Cloning old SSD to new SSD

When you say 'recovered the image to the new SSD'. Did you clone from the HDD to new SSD, and why the round about method ?

I've never cloned to an external drive, with the exception of when the machine has an external hot swap SATA port, but I

have cloned from SSD to HDD and back again using a SATA connection without any issues.

The boot sector should get written to the new drive by the cloning software (I use AOEMI ). The software also sorts out

alignment differences between HDD and SSD.

If there is a problem booting with the new drive, if you swap the SATA ports so the new drive is connected to the port the

old was connected to and vice-versa, the boot sector should get written to the new drive when you reboot.
