Cloning Windows 10 to smaller SSD

Yes, I first tried AOME1; it does resize the partitions to fit the smaller SSD, the free version is a little slow, however, the culprit was it also stopped cloning after it could not read from "bad sectors"......yes, I ran check disc with the scan and repair attributes, first of all.....no, I didn't wipe the SSD, because if you read my posts, it's a brand new SSD.....the problem is not that cloning of a larger HD to a smaller SSD is not possible, but it appears you cannot clone from a disk with BAD SECTORS.....At this point I'm looking into a new install of Windows 10 pro, then can migrate my files manually.....since the date for free windows 10 download has just passed (less than one week), not sure if I can do this, since I got the free download to upgrade from Windows 7......If anyone knows how to clone a HD with BAD SECTORS, please let me know. If anyone knows the answer to my Windows 10 fresh install, please let me know.....I do appreciate all the responses, and especially like the "quick" relies from you all....thanks!

There is an option with Macrium that you can set to skip bad sector.

Do you have another external HD to save a backup image ? If so, create a backup image to another drive, From Macrium, click on "Crreate an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" then save it to the external HD. Again, restore this image to the SSD.

NOTE: put a check mark on "Skip bad sector"

Driveclone (free) doesn't care about drive size. If there is enough room for the data you'll be fine!

    Hi there

If moving to a SMALLER SSD why bother with CLONE.

    1) Backup original Windows (plus reserved partition) optional step but I would always do it in case something breaks.

    2) Re-size existing Windows partition with your new wanted desired size - GPARTED or any one of a whole slew of Free partition managers.

    3) Backup again

    4) Backup (from 2) to your new HDD.

Use IMAGE rather than CLONE for Free Macrium.

    Cheers

Thanks for the hint; I do have an external HD, but of course it's full, so I went out and bought a 64 GB USB stick; guess what, Macrium doesn't list the stick as an option! I did try to create an Image though, and that transfer also stopped at the very same Bad Sector spot, as the cloning did (I did check the skip bad sectors).....So, unless I can find another HD to transfer to, I'm probably going to have to buy a Windows Pro 64.....I saw an ad for only $49....
