Windows 10: C'mon Ms let XP users upgrade too W10 could be the REAL XP killer

Discus and support C'mon Ms let XP users upgrade too W10 could be the REAL XP killer in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; Can I just clarify something here? (And yes I know this has been posted elsewhere) So I'm an insider. I am a Vista user. But I have a second hand HP... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by jimbo45, Aug 2, 2015.

If you can get a copy of the last build 10240,.. you might be able to get that to work. Check out Microsoft News.. I got a good ISO from them.

I believe the very old Insider builds are already expired. Still, if your CPU won't run 8, it won't 10.

Regarding XP, anyone that wants to upgrade has, or they have a really good reason not to. It's ridiculously cheap to get a copy of Windows 7 starter for $10 off ebay (or less). Then you can upgrade to 10 for free. If you can't spend $10 on your OS, I doubt free will change anything.

  3. But the x86 version should run, no? I thought the CPU issues are only on x64?

Windows 10 will run better than 7 or 8 on older machines, it has lower system requirements and will adapt better. It was made to be an universal OS for all different platforms like Xbox, tablet or phones.

  6. Yeah I thought all of that NX/SSE2 business was just on x64 builds. When I tested the initial Win10 TP builds, I used a VM on my known incompatible machine (for x64). I'll try to fetch the 10240 build like BunnyJ suggested.

Anyhoo, sorry to derail the thread.

Only one of them is. NX is still a requirement in both. CMXCHG16 is the one that's required for 64 bit.

If MS did this for XP then they would have to do it for Vista. But maybe it would be a good idea as they want every platform and user to be on Windows 10.

If the laptop has got 2GB Ram and a CPU with at leat 1MB cache and a cupbenchmark of 1500+ then I say go ahead, Win 10 will run well.

But that spec is only going to apply to the higher end laptops from the end of the XP era, circa late 2006/early 2007.

I just fired up a dormant Dell Inspiron 1501 with XP from 2007, to check the spec, and no chance is that POS going to run Win 10 in a meaningful manner.

    Hi there

Beware of those ebay things -- if they've already been activated then your W10 update won't be activated. You'd do better to simply join the insider program.

I AM keeping an XP VM -- Cutting Vinyls and using old Minidiscs -- works 100% on XP but nothing later.

I still prefer the old LUNA BLACK theme on XP to the modern themes available - but that's just a personal issue. Other than that I LIKE W10 - but there are situations for still running XP as a VM.

I do think though unlike Vista and even W7 - W10 seems to run on much leaner machines so perhaps giving out free upgrades with the proviso that upgrading from XP is an AYOR operation (At your Own Risk) and Ms won't give any support seems to me a good solution.

@Nus -- try the x86 version of W10 --you might be pleasantly surprised !!!!.

I've seen a few machines that were on a ONE WAY trip to the City TIP have been able to run insider build 10240 quite successfully. !!!

Usually X86 version. The main thing appears to be lack of RAM (you need AT LEAST 1GB preferably 2GB or more) and SLOW HDD's - an SSD will kick life into the older machines --perfectly OK for email, web surfing, SKYPE, "Farcebook", movie watching and basic Office type stuff. Obviously no good for serious video editing / gaming etc though.

With X86 (32 bit version) most of the CPU extension things that are required to run the 64 bit version aren't necessary. Ignore the Ms compatibility tests -- just TRY it -- often even when Ms says this machine won't run - it actually DOES !!!!

    Cheers
