Comments attributes unreadable by File Explorer

On my Windows 10 PC, the Comments attribute is no longer readable or writable from File Explorer or equivalent like xplorer2. It did work for the first two months I had the PC. This is the case for all file types from all drives and even files on other PCs on the network. The Comments attribute for these files can be read and written to by any other app on this PC and by any other PC on the network which can read the Comments attribute in its File Explorer. So the problem is only File Explorer on this one PC or whatever process is running File Explorer and its equivalents. See below, File Explorer is on the left.

sfc /scannow dism and /online /cleanup-image /CheckHealth find no corruption and all other troubleshooters cannot locate any problems.

The following steps have been tried and do NOT resolve the issue:

    • Restore Defaults in File Explorer
    • Restore Defaults in Search
    • Rebuilding the Index
    • Rebooting in Safe Mode
    • Creating a new account either as Administrator or local
    • Running dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

The only update that happened the day before and day of the File Explorer no longer accessing Comments attributes was this mysterious one in Apps & features:

As you can see, Modify and Uninstall are grayed out. Microsoft Edge itself lacks the Advanced Options option and Modify shows by clicking on it does nothing. Restoring default values in Edge doesn't solve the Comments attributes issue. Obviously, Microsoft doesn't allow me to uninstall Edge.

Everything else on the PC works fine, but not being able to access Comments in files hinders my work.

    :)

  2. Change file attribute to 'unhide'

    Hello Walt,

Thank you for posting your concern in Microsoft Community and welcome to the Windows 10 Family.

I suggest you to follow the below steps to change the attribute of any file/folder to unhide.

    Step A: Show Hidden files

    1. Open Windows Explorer(win logo key+E) or My computer.

    2. Now click on View on top of the window.
    3. Untick ‘Hidden items’ in the options.

    Step B: Change file attribute

    1. Once the hidden file is located, right click on the file/folder you want to change the attribute for.

    2. Go to ‘properties’, untick the box facing hidden.

    3. Now, Click on ‘apply’ and then ‘ok’.

    Hope it helps.

    Thank You.

    File Explorer Display Attributes

In Windows 10 file explorer you can display attributes for a file such as Name, #, Artist, Album etc. for example on an MP3 file.

But when I add an additional attribute to the display such as contributing artist or when I sort on an attribute such as Album when I exit out of that folder and go back into it I lose the additional attribute and the sort reverts back to what it was originally.

Is there a setting that needs to be set to keep the changes I make?

    Thanks

    Tom

Comments attributes unreadable by File Explorer

Comments and tags not saved or disappears

    Hello,

Could you please answer few question:

    • Are you not able to see the Comments section in the file or the comment is missing for the MP3 file in the file section?
If the Comment section is missing, I suggest you to follow the steps and check if it helps.

Right click on the categories where you see the file section and click on more and scroll down and check on Comments section and check if it helps.

And issues with Microsoft Word 2010, suggest you to post your query in on the below link and check if it helps.

Results in Microsoft 365 and Office - Microsoft Community

    Hope this helps.
