  1. Computer Freezes when playing games and when not playing games

I've been having this issue for nearly a year now (probably around 9 months). It started after my little sister made me get a virus by her trying to download something onto my laptop. I've since taken it to a reputable computer shop as well as followed instructions from other computer wizs and I think it's no longer there. Issue is, my computer has kind of developed another problem after that. It freezes on it's own sometimes, when I pick it up or even when it's on a desk and immobile. It would also freeze when I play a game sometimes, loud buzzing sound as the game continues in loops I believe. I had BSOD problems earlier this year that was solved (Apparently. I haven't gotten any in about 4-5 months) when I had Windows 7 but this issue still persists.

When it would freeze and I manually turn off my computer and turn it back on, the laptop would sometimes say no wifi could be detected. At all. Not mine, not my neighbors, nothing. I've never really taken it out of the house so I don't know if it'd act the same elsewhere. I would then shut it down and take out the battery for 30 seconds before putting it back in. Sometimes the wifi would work then or I'd go connect it to my Internet Modem and the wifi would start working over there too.

So I'm not sure what's causing this problem. It's not overheating as I had it cleaned less than 4 months ago by a professional. I've had this laptop for two years and I really wanted it to last me at least 4 because I'll be going into an animation program soon and to get a laptop of the same caliber costs $1000+.

Is there anyway I can solve this freezing issue/loss of wifi on my own? I'm thinking of taking it back to the computer shop (they've had a hard time trying to find out what's wrong with it) but I'm sure they'll charge me again and I'm not willing to end up paying a lot to get this fixed. Might as well buy a new one if it costs more than $500 to fix...

P.S. I'm also having issues with my sound card where I'd plug in my headphones and it would work but when I take it out, my laptop would say it's still plugged in. Addtionally, my CD Rom Drive makes a loud sound when I try to skip through CDs and DVDs. Sometimes it won't even skip and just continue making the sound. I don't know how my laptop has gotten to this state as I've taken very good care of it (minus allowing a younger sibling to use it but you live and learn). These issues don't bother me much as I can use a DVD player for my DVD's and the sound issue isn't an issue for me. I don't really care for it since I use headphones 90% of the time or have the sound off.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 freezes

I purchased a PC a few days ago. When watching videos or playing games, the computer freezes. I have to perform a hard shut down on the computer. You can watch videos or play games for about 20 minutes before it will freeze.

Hi ... Welcome to Ten forums ... If I'm correct you did upgrade your laptop to windows 10 and are activated, if so ? I would recommend you do a clean installation of windows 10

  5. Thank You for responding.

I do want to try a clean install of Windows but if it's hardware and not software, I'll lose Microsoft Office without having found a solution *Sad which is very important for me. Is there a way for me to find the license key?

i don't mind losing Microsoft Office if it means my computer will act normal again but if it doesn't even after I do the clean install, it would be upsetting.

If you upgraded your laptop from windows 7 to windows 10 and know for fact it's activated then there no license keys needed . Microsoft keeps a record of your system once you upgraded to windows 10 . There links/ website from this site as to how to perform a clean installation of windows 10 . I'm sure othet here will probably provide it so, if not ? I will look for you if you like ...

But be sure your windows 10 upgrade has been activated before doing a clean installation

I've never done it, but it's probably possible to get your Office key using a keyfinder, and downloading a copy from Microsoft that could be installed with that key.

Manage, Download, Backup, Restore Microsoft Office Products

I believe that MagicalJellybean keyfinder works under 10, but there may be better choices.

To state the obvious, get the key and download before trying the clean install. You may want to test it first.

  9. Thank you! I will try this once I get home. How do I test it out before doing the reinstall for Windows 10?

Edit: And how do I know if my Windows 10 has been activated?

Before you do anything backup all your stuff that you want or need . then download Belarc Advisor and install it . Start up Belarc Advisor program and you should see Software License , click on that and look for your Office application, then copy down the license keys for it . Once you have that and your ready to do a clean installation take a look at the website below and try to follow it . Normally I would tell people to get their drivers for their system beforehand but I notice your model Asus doesn't have it . So Windows 10 probably will install the needed ones . Oh yeah , I forgot to mention if you click the Start menu and then Setting, click on Update and Security, then Activation on the left side . It will tell you whether you are or aren't

  11. I got my code for Microsoft Office 2013 and I see my computer is activated. I also backed everything up onto my portable hard drive. Unfortunately, I can't find my 32GB usb drive to create the clean install so I'm going to have to buy another. I don't have a CD to do it either. From the instructions, USB drive is good, right? 20GB for 64bit? I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

Yep, You shouldn't have a problem, though all you need is an 8gb usb stick to download windows 10 64 onto . Just make sure your system in the bios can boot off an usb drive . Just curious what is the original operating system and do you have a copy of it ?

My original operating system was Windows 8 but whoever gave it to my friend downgraded it to Windows 7. Which is why I couldn't do a clean install before, according to others who were helping me. I'm not sure by what you mean by copy? Like on a USB too? I don't have the CD for Windows 7 Professional unfortunately. Will this be a problem?

And great! I have 8GB USBs right in front of me, I thought I needed one with at least 20gb and that's sadly the one I have probably lost. :/

I believe you have windows 8 in a hidden recovery partition were by if you ever want to reinstall windows 8 back to factory setting ( how it was when you bought it ) you can . what does Disk Management show ? Do you see a recovery partition ? As for windows 10 yes you need at least 20gb to install on the hard drive but not the windows 10 software, the software is around 4gb. Again curious why did you downgrade from 8 to 7 ? Also, take a look at Microsoft website about Windows 10 below

  15. I didn't downgrade from Windows 8 to 7. This computer was a gift to me and the individual who gave it to the person who gave it to me (I know it's a little complicated), downgraded it to Windows 7 but didn't do anything else to it. We aren't sure why they did. It was part of a school program so I'm guessing it was because most prefer Windows 7 over Windows 8.

This is what Disk Management shows. I don't think there is a recovery partition.

Because it is getting a little late here, I'll do the clean install for sure tomorrow. I'm just a little nervous. If something goes wrong, what do I do?
