  1. Computer is extremely slow on boot, wondering if it's windows or hard drive.

I'm trying to figure out how to speed up my computer a little. I've had my computer for around 5 years and in the last few it's gotten really slow on boot and in the first 10ish minutes of booting up. My hard drive is a little older but i believe it's an earlier sshd. These shouldn't be that slow but the drive is filled about 90%. Im considering buying a newer bigger hard drive and cloning everything because i would believe it's just the old hard drive, but would this be a windows issue or something else?

Any help is appreciated just not sure where to look.

    Maxtor Hard Drive Beep

    Maxtor drive beeps

Have a similiar situation using a DiamondMax Plus 8, 20GB Mfg Date 4/15/03. Drive used as a second system drive. Drive is recognized in boot menu but not in drive list. Drive is always connected. Computer started locking up for several seconds at a time. Chkdsk on drives and couldn't find that drive. Removed drive from bay to make sure connections were ok and heard the beeping. Shutdown and restart and never got to windows screen. Restarted several times then saw drive in boot menu and Windows loaded but Maxtor not in drive menu. When recognized in boot menu, computer will start but beeps and is not found.

Tried kicking it real hard but no improvement. Any suggestions?

    * sleepy hard drive - extremely slow - timeouts ??

My WD2500BEVT does the same thing, Western has admitted that *some* of their hard-drives have this strange behavior, unfortunately mine is not on their list.

My suggestion is, if you are on Windows use quietHDD, and if you are on Linux you need to create a shell script to set the APM parameters using hdparm.

    Good luck.
