  1. Computer Keeps Typing Apostrophe's

Hello, I made a thread about this some time ago, but I could not reply and I did not understand most of what the people were saying. my problem is that, since last summer, my computer has been always typing apostrophe's, and I have not been able to use log in to my Microsoft account. It was a new keyboard at the time, so I'm worried it might be a virus. If you need more details, I'll tell you. Thanks!

    :)

  2. Apostrophe's when typing text

While auto-correct works fairly well at correcting misisng apostrophe's, it's not great. Also there are words it can't hope to get right, such as ill or I'll, which become very annoying when it consistently picks the wrong one.

Am I missing a trick here? If not, I'd prefer it if you were able to either type them, by having a key on the main keyboard, or to use another existing key on the main keyboard, such as full stop or the comma.

In fact, now that I've reset my dictionary to undo an annoying issue with 'dont', I've noticed that the word ill doesn't seem to be a suggestion from the dictionary anymore... it just autocorrects to I'll. I also don't seem to be able to add 'ill' the dictionary
now.... even though I had it in there before. Very odd.

  4. Computer Keeps Typing Apostrophe's

    Hi there Masterofcards.

Is it when you type specific keys on the keyboard? If so which ones, or do they just randomly appear sometimes?

More details on your keyboard would be helpful (e.g. Microsoft Keyboard 600 USB) and the model number of the computer (look for a sticker -e.g. Toshiba Satellite L750)

Very unlikely this is a virus and is probably more to do with the way the keyboard is configured *Wink.

Can you recall any time the keyboard worked correctly or has it always done this?

    You could try this:

Note: This is only relevant for keyboards which clearly have a different layout (e.g from other countries)

    • Left click on start and select the cog wheel icon (Settings)
    • Click on Time & language
    • On the left side bar click Region & language
    • Click on the appropriate language you would be using in your country and select options
    • Check you have a keyboard setup (default is usually US QWERTY) but check the different keyboard layouts as you might have a different keyboard. If so select add a keyboard and choose the correct one, then remove the other keyboard configuration.

Is this a laptop or a desktop?
This sounds like a stuck key
Try the onscreen keyboard. Does the same thing happen?
If an external keyboard, turn it upside down and shake all crumbs and dust out, then blow out the keys with compressed air.
    Try a different external keyboard.

  7. Hi, it types apostrophe's as soon as I turn on the computer. I can type another key, or press backspace to stop the Horde of apostrophe's, but when I let go, it starts again. My keyboard is a Logitech K60 with a Logitech M215 mouse. I couldn't find a model number sticker for this computer, but I know it's an HP laptop. T keyboard was working fine for a month, then this started happening. I cannot access my computer, because I need to log in with my Microsoft account to do that, which I can't because of this problem.

It's a laptop. I'm using an external keyboard. I was using the internal keyboard at first, but a family member accidentally ruined it when he tried to clean it. I can't access my computer because I need to log in to my Microsoft account to do that, which I can't do because it keeps typing apostrophe's. I'm typing this from my IPad. I don't have another external keyboard, and I hope buying a new one is a last resort.

  9. So I am assuming the apostrophe problem does not occur when you disconnect your usb keyboard?

This does sound like a physical problem, so try your best to clean the apostrophe key especially, by pulling it off gently and clear under it by (preferably) using compressed air or a gentle vacum.

To login, disconnect the usb keyboard and type your password using the on-screen keyboard from "ease of access".

  10. I don't have compressed air, and I'm not sure what you mean by a gentle vacuum. Also, even when the USB Keyboard is disconnected, it still keeps typing apostrophe's, so I don't know if this is a physical problem, and I can't use the on-screen keyboard because of this.

  11. Ah, so it must be the keyboard in your laptop that is typing the apostrophes. This also makes it quite impossible to use the on-screen-keyboard.

First check if there is a function key (fn) or a hot key to disable the laptop keyboard.

There are probably only three things I can suggest:

    • Try to gently take off the apostrophe key in your laptop by referring to this guide. Then consider buying some compressed air or use a vacuum cleaner/mini vacuum on the key once the key cap has been taken off.
    • This is more advanced and wouldn't recommend this unless you are absolutely sure you know what you are doing) but you could try unscrewing the laptop from the bottom and disconnecting the keyboard connector itself. You will need a disassembly guide for your specific laptop. You could also take it into a shop and get them to either disable the keyboard or possibly see if it can be replaced.
    • Enter the BIOS by firstly completely shutting down your computer (and with your usb keyboard plugged in) turn it on and repeatedly press f10 (could also be f1, f2, f8, f12) until you see a blue/black screen that has a BIOS title at the top. Then see if you can navigate around by using the esc, arrow keys and enter keys to an option for a laptop internal keyboard. See if you can disable it by changing the option from enabled to disabled, or if you can see no option then you can't disable the laptop keyboard from the BIOS, save and exit by pressing f10 again or whatever the instructions say at the bottom.

So unfortunately it sounds like it needs to be repaired/disabled by a shop, unless you are completly sure you know how to remove your laptop keyboard.

What needs to happen now is probably a way to disable the laptop keyboard. This is not as easy as unplugging a usb keyboard as a laptop keyboard is connected inside the laptop. This usually means unscrewing multiple components to get to the keyboard laptop.

  12. My laptop keyboard is completely non-functional. It completely unresponsive since that family memeber cleaned it with wrong spray, and it wasn't typing apostrophe's from the start. It was only a month after we replaced the keyboard that the apostrophe thing happened. I don't know if it can be fixed, And I don't think it's even the problem, but what kind of shop do you want me to go to to get it replaced, if that's what I need to do?

  13. Computer Keeps Typing Apostrophe's

By replaced, do you mean you replaced it with a new laptop keyboard or a usb keyboard?

The reason I think its the laptop keyboard is becuase the apostrophe's are still being typed even with the usb keyboard unplugged. From my knowledge there is no way that the apostrophe can be typed by a program, unless its something like a voice recogniser.

Even though the laptop keyboard appears un-responsive it is likely that it is still connected internally. This probably means its the actual hardware of the keyboard and needs to be physcially unplugged from the motherboard (inside the laptop).

You could try a computer repair store that specialises in replacing specific parts (e.g touchpads, speakers, screens etc...) For me in New Zealand, I go to Harvey Norman who has their own seperate computer repair store. So you could try the store where you brought it from...

I suppose it could be a program that has a command to repeadly type apostrophes, but I find this very hard to believe as it happens at the login screen where most programs start up after the user has logged in.

Its a bit hard for me to help any further since I believe its more of a hardware problem and we can't get past the login screen. I'm open to any suggestions that other members on this forum might have.
