Computer restarts when idle after upgrade to Windows 10

    Hi,
I faced also the problem described above ( laptop reboots after some time (30-40 min) if is not used (idle mode).
Also the sleeping mode did not worked. I did not had this problem under Win7 nor Win 8.0/8.1.

Here the solution worked in my case ( I got this hint from some else).
I deinstalled virusscanner (Kaspersky) and reinstalled virus´scanner again ( newer version IS 2016).
Under Defender - after deinstallation Kaspersky - the sleeping mode worked perfectly again.
I did not had an unwanted reboot .

  2. I may have found a setting that leads to this problem, which I have also been dealing with for a while.
In the Power and Sleep setting where you can select to have monitor turn off NEVER and choose NEVER for Sleep, there's an option below those for Advance Settings which open a box which shows a big list of setting to change. I noticed one for setting (minutes) for the Hard Disk to shut down. Mine was set for 20 minutes. I changed that and will see next time I idle so long if that makes a difference. There is a maximum number of minutes you can set. Not sure what the actual limit is. I tried a huge number and wouldn't set to that, so I tried 600 (equals 10 hours). It let me set it for that amount.

I think what 90% of the people experiencing the restart when idle is auto update, the other 10% just have dicked up machines.

I'm having a similar issue with Windows 10.
My PC shuts off randomly with no BSOD and reboots.
I've changed thew power settings so that nothing turns off for ages, so that's not an issue.
I didn't get any reboots on Windows 7.

    Specs:
    Asus Z87-K
    i7 4770k
    8Gb 2133
    GTX 770
    EVGA 650G PSU

    Cheers for any info.

I had the exact same thing happening when I was playing GW2.
Turns out that if there is an onboard graphics card as well as an "add-on" graphics card, the 2 don't like to play together. To fix this I went into Device Manager > View > Display Hidden Devices
Then under Display Adapters there will be one that is grey (Mine was Intel HD 4700 or something) and my Nvidia GeForce GTX 960. I uninstalled the Intel card, and have had no issues since.

    Hope this helps.

I'm having the same issue as well. windows 10, reboots only on idle, no BSOD. this also isn't the first installation of this OS. I've had this issue on every reformat that I've had to do.

    specs:
    gigabyte GA-790FXTA
    AMD phenom II 965be 3.4Ghz
    Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Titanium (pci-e card)
    12GB DDR3 Ram
    AMD XFX R9 270x (crossfired)
    Corsair 850TX PSU

i'll update this post with all of my loaded software/background tasks here in a while to see if there are any commonalities between us.

*edit* well the list will be pointless. I tried a clean boot last night with just Razer comms, steam and Battle.net launcher loaded. played some games then put it to idle/lockscreen and woke up to find this thing had rebooted. gonna keep updating with some troubleshooting findings. gonna try to leave this thing in my bios while at work today.

*edit2* bios test was good today. I figured it would be. my next test is to leave the computer in safe mode for the next 24 ish hours.

#edit3* safe mode test panned out ok. again no reboots. one thing I did notice is that since leaving the computer in safe mode I have had no more reboots in normal mode. from here if I get the same problem i'll begin looking at drivers and the like.

Hi all I'm having same problem I have a Asus g75vw gaming laptop windows 7. After upgrade to windows ten it reboots once after about 15 minutes after that its ok, then I checked my event viewer and I get kernel power log error 41 blabla Updated to windows 10 on 29/9/2015 the next day when I turned on my laptop 30/9/2015 it rebooted on its own after about 15 minutes but like I said it runs ok after that one reboot, so thought it was a bit coincidental, rang Asus they said it needs repairs but I think its windows 10 and I don't want to be charged for nothing. I thought could it be a software problem but its got me beat, one thing I tried was unplug mains power and ran it on battery only and it didn't reboot so what's that tell you, i refuse to believe its my power adapter dates tell me something, any suggestions I've tried a few things that I've read but no fix, I have read updates on windows 10 are causing a lot of reboot loop issues but mine isn't in a loop, it just reboots once after 15 minutes weird , laptop runs perfectly otherwise

Forgot to mention I worked out the dates buy the first kernel error log and windows 10 first update Microsoft couldn't tell me how to find out when I upgraded to windows 10 so hope this small detail can help because knowing the date didn't make this such a mystery it tells me its more like software and not hardware

Computer restarts when idle after upgrade to Windows 10

I've been having this problem for a week or so now, but I've had Windows 10 since it first became available. When I close my laptop lid, especially overnight, it reboots. Which is a real pain in the neck because then I have to open things again, if I've got an audio or video on pause, I have to refind my place... I tried changing some settings last night before closing the lid, but all it did was shut the laptop completely down.

I reset everything to default and now it just goes into hibernate instead of restarting. I'm not sure it's actually set to hibernate, but hibernation is better than restarting!

  10. My PC is now also doing this, I've tried all the fixes suggested here and nothing. It's fine when gaming, or sitting on the internet. but if I leave it alone, guarantee it'll reboot.

It HAS to be a windows 10 update conflicting somewhere!?

I'm thinking so. Like I said, I've had Windows 10 since it first came out and this is a new problem. It never did the rebooting thing until about a week ago, except when it was doing automatic updates. That's what I thought it was at first, but when it was every single day and it wasn't installing anything on start up... The only thing that has helped is me resetting to default in the advanced Power Options in the Balanced Power Plan setting.

I'm also having this problem but it appears right after laptop goes to sleep. I try to wake it up, it wakes but it starts computer compitely over. I have tried everything in this thread and only thing I found in common with these wierd starts is first happened week after I upgraded to 10 second came another week later third and fourth came couple of days later and then couple more in next day. But then there is one full month and then these wierd restars start again and now it's something that happens everytime I put my computer to sleep. The connection I found is pretty loose but it's something everytime this is happening there have been some sort of Windows Defender. And offtopic there's also this wierd security notifications where Windows warns that I don't have working security and Norton says everything is fine. And the fault discription I found in Event viewer is roughly translated this: "System have been resatrted without complitly shutting down the system before. This failure might come from power lost, crahing or system stoped to respond."

Computer restarts when idle after upgrade to Windows 10

I hace the same problem, i own an Asus gl551jm laptop, the problem started in win10 so I though that it could be solved by downgrading to 8, but no, the problem kept the same. Every time the laptop sleep, after I tried to wake it up it only restarted.
I send it to Asus but they couldn't fix anything. It's a windows error because I tried Ubuntu on mi laptop and everything just worked out fine.

  14. I think it's worth highlighting that almost everyone showing the symptoms is running an ASUS computer (me too!).

not running ASUS, and yea anytime i leave my computer Idle it just shuts off, doesn't restart, it just shuts off. Additionally it is scrambling my desktop icons. nearly every time i restart my system after a shut down, the desktop icons have moved. I have tried resetting to default and changing all of my sleep, idle settings but nothing seems to change. If I am gaming, i can play a 6 hour game session, and the computer runs flawlessly...i shut down my game and walk into the kitchen for food, and i come out, and its off. Will also shut down when idle for more than a few minutes with firefox or facebook open. I have been hunting this thing down for a week. I am not very computer savvy i tend to be a button mashing gamer boy, but i can read and follow instructions and so i have been haunting forums for days trying to find a fix. It was fine until a couple weeks ago, and I upgraded to Win10 almost day 1 release. Have Win10 on my wife's laptop, which IS an ASUS system and it only happens occasionally for her....with me its constant, anytime I idle, it shuts down. This leads me to believe its software issues. I have cleaned my hardware thoroughly, blew three air cans cleaning every nook of my tower case. reassembled it all carefully and completely, reapplied thermal paste to the CPU coolers. Checked all the fans for operation...and I am still smashing my face into the keyboard 8x a day because i walk out of the room and come back 3 minutes later and my PC is off.....HOPE....hope they address this soon
