Computer slow and sluggish after installing windows 10 update

I have a HP 500 277c w/ I7 3.40 Ghz processor and 12 gb of memory. Prior to install of update I could run multiple programs with no problem. Since install I can only run one program at a time. Anything more and the systems slows and gets sluggish. I updated all drivers with HP and Intel and did all the normal housekeeping chores. It still runs slow and jagged.

    :)

Absolutely you can - first step would be to find out what programs are causing the computer to run slow. I walk through how to do that here: Fix a Sluggish Slow PC

It could also be that the Windows 10 setup isn't done yet. Windows 10 will be slow for up to a few days or even a week after install of the OS or new builds. If the above sluggish troubleshooting link doesn't help, this might identify why not: PSA:

Hi, let's start with the usual basic checks, and try to get a little more information.

    1. Please do this to check your file system:
    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

    2. Please post a screenshot of your task manager when the system is nominally idle. Please make sure any columns showing significant resource use are organised with processes using most resources at the top.

    3. Please confirm HP lists your system as approved to run Win 10. (Manufacturer's usually have a page listing approved PCs).

    4. Is your BIOS up to date?

    5. If your task manager shows significant resource use, please try a clean boot, and post another screenshot of your task manager.

    6. Please add your disk info to your system specs.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response I have been out of town so the late response. I ran Chkdsk as requested but can't find the results. System would only run Chkdsk on a reboot. I went to eventvwr but can't find it under applications.

Hi, from that you have two issues, as you'll have noticed.
    1. svchost.exe using resources
    2. Defender using resources (which could be a consequence of (1) )
The first thing I'd try is installing Avast (free). This is very light on resources and will turn Defender's active mode off.

In 2 or 3 instances I've had to wrest control of a PC from Windows Defender... this may not be the case here, but worth trying as a relatively easy and reversible step.

Turning to svchost.exe. Identifying what's happening here becomes more technical. If after the above it's still using excessive resources please work through this:
