    The issue is what the title states, how should find what program might be doing this?

    I tested the issue by leaving the cursor on a text field and plugging the keyboard out. In about 10 minutes there were 3 dashes without me touching anything.

    • Which web browser are you using?
    • Are you facing this issue on all the web browsers?

    This issue could have occurred due to these reasons:

    3. Corrupt keyboard driver.

    Try the steps listed here:

    Method 1:

    I would suggest you to connect an external keyboard and check if the issue persists or not.

    Method 2:

    If the issue persists, I suggest you to download and install all available Windows Updates and devices drivers from the computer manufacturer website.

    Method 3:

    If the issue persists, I suggest you to download and install latest keyboard driver from the manufacturer website and check if it helps.

  3. USB keyboard disconnects when holding any button down

    I suggest you to follow the below methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1: I suggest you to try the following steps and check if it helps:

    • The USB connection may be loose. Try unplugging the keyboard, and then plugging it back in.
    • Plug the keyboard into a different USB port.
    • If your keyboard is plugged into a USB hub or USB switch box, try removing it and plugging the keyboard into the computer.
    • Unplug other USB devices that are not in use.
    • Try the keyboard on another computer to verify it is working correctly

    Method 2: Also I suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the usb keyboard drivers as below and check if it helps.

    • Press Windows+X and go to device manager.
    • Then expand keyboards and right click on the driver.
    • Then click on uninstall and restart the computer.
    • It will be reinstalled automatically and check if it helps.

    Kindly follow the below steps and check if it helps.

    Step 1: Turn off on screen keyboard

    • Open Start menu, type Settings in search bar and click on Settings.
    • Click on Ease of access and select keyboard.
    • Turn off the on screen keyboard.

    Step 2: Turn off tablet mode

    I suggest you to turn off tablet mode, as it may also be the cause for the issue.

    • Open Start menu, type tablet mode settings in search bar and click on it.
    • Turn off the tablet mode option and check if it helps.
