Concealment of applications in Windows 10 ...

Microsoft now conceals the presence of applications in Windows 10 by hiding them in Windows\ProgramFiles\WindowsApps.

This mainly seems to be used for applications installed from the Microsoft Store, but we cannot be sure about that. However access to the location is prevented unless one fiddles with the security settings.

And so, first, there is an important issue of the ethics of hiding applicatiions away like this. Especially as I found quite a few applications there which I have never installed. Maybe Microsoft might care to answer this.

However, there is also a practical issue as follows:

It is my practice to link my main applications to the desktop, and then to move them into categorised desktop folders. When I do this, I often find that the program icons are no longer visible. With non-Microsoft applications, this may also happen, but I can access the icons in the library or executable files of the application and refresh the icon in the link. The arrangement with Microsoft Applications installed into WindowsApps does not seem to permit this, so we are left with some kind of ghost icon, access to the files of the application is prohibited. So for example where is the program icon for the application "FilmForth" ?

[As an aside, and as a user of every Windows version since v1.03: I consider that Windows 10 is an utter failure. The best version of Windows was Windows 7. I'd say that Microsoft's current generation of Windows developers need to go back and study previous versions and use the best features.
And as a further point, why has Windows never had "Persistent Menus on Right Mouse Click" implemented? This would save so much time when multiple selections have to be made from the same menu. If you don't know what I mean, look at RISC-OS.]

The actual topic for this post is: Windows design and Features.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK
