Configure Win 7 using AIK/ADK on WIn 10?

John, regarding sysprepping Build 9926, this warning from the beginning of my customization tutorial:

Configure Win 7 using AIK/ADK on WIn 10? [IMG]
    Warning Build 9926 Known Issues:

Use the Enterprise edition for sysprepping Build 9926, normal Pro edition has a bug and sysprep fails every time (subjective piece of information, based only on my own tests). Free Enterprise download at www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-enterprise-technical-preview?i=1

1.) Build 9926 Pro edition (from Windows Insider) fails the sysprep every time on vm and two thirds of tries on real machine. This seems to be (comical enough!) due Windows Insider app. Checking the error logs there's various errors every time, but always something common:

"Package Microsoft.InsiderHub_1.1.0.400_x64 was installed for a user, but not provisioned for all users".

I tried removing the AppxPackage Microsoft.InsiderHub before sysprepping, did not work. Also trying to install offline, vm not connected to network when installing to avoid installing the Hub in the first place did not help, however logical solution that had been.

2.) Build 9926 Enterprise edition (from TechNet Evaluation Center), sysprep and customizations work every time like a charm as long as you remember to disconnect the computer or vm from the network before starting to install. As soon as you have arrived to desktop in Audit Mode you can reconnect the computer and download ADK and software to be installed. When connected to network while installing, all vm syspreps failed and over half on the real machines. As soon as I tried to install network disconnected, my success rate was 100%.

Note Even if the Sysprep works when done as told above, Enterprise edition installed without Internet connection, it's quite useles as it disables Start Menu, Search and Modern apps. At this point Sysprep can only be used for testing various answer file scenarios but I do not recommend using it to modify or customize a Windows setup you intend to use. Windows is nearly useless without Start and Search not to mention Modern apps like Settings and Mail not working.

3.) You cannot create a catalog file (Part 5 Step 5.6 in this tutorial) using the install.wim file in Build 9926. Use Windows 8.1 Update, or Windows 10 Builds 9841, 9860 or 9879 install.wim. When you have saved your answer file, open it with Notepad and edit the highlighted part in below example answer file, everything between the double quotes. In this example it is wim:X:\Sources\install.wim#Windows 10 Enterprise, meaning that the Windows install media and its install.wim file used for Sysprepping (which as told above is not the same we use for catalog) are located on drive X:.

Lol. Kari, I was confirming that even with varied BIOS settings changed, it fails.

Also, as soon as I enter Audit mode in 9926 (non-enterprise) I have no start menu at all. Thankfully, Win + X works perfectly fine, though.

Finally, I'm trying to work out a method to have the Audit mode sysprepping work when using Easy2Boot / RMPrepUSB to load the .ISO directly off USP, as opposed to having an extracted ISO - I don't have that many jump drives, but i *do* have that many install ISOs....

I suspect the easiest way to accomplish this would be to copy the necessary .wim file during install via command prompt so that I could perform a sysprep, based upon the commandline arguments passed during the final sysprep phase back to OOBE, or does it require a lot more than the one (.wim) file?

Bah. Windows 10 and my mobo are not playing nicely, well, in terms of Hyper-V.

Win 10 will install perfectly fine regardless of if I have my normal BIOS Settings or if I have the BIOS default settings, or any combination thereof. However, before I can enable Hyper-V, I have to enable both Execute Disable Bit as well as Virtualization - which is the way it should be.

However, with both enabled, and enabling Hyper-V, upon reboot the machine refuses to boot, and goes into Automatic Repair mode. If I disable Execute Disable Bit, then the machine boots - and Hypoer-V manager starts just fine, but I cannot start a VM b/c it detects Execute Disable Bit as being disabled.

If I then re-enable Execute Disable Bit, Win 10 boots fine - but Hyper-V still sees it as disabled.

    This is getting frustrating.

I was hoping to be able to wait until the summer time before starting a new build. Now... I may have no choice if I want to move forward.

Off to do some research on X58/ICH10R based mobos and Win 10 / Hyper-V>

Now, let's bake the noodle a bit more.

This is from the laptop on which Hyper-V was working perfectly fine, albeit very slowly, as expected of the architecture:

And this is from my dekstop at home that refuses to play nicely with Hyper-V on Win 10.

    Are we baking yet?

I cannot understand it. An i7 should always play nicely with Hyper-V.

    Hi there

HYPER V even works running a W7, XP AND another W10 system using a Surface pro 3 (i7) as Host. !! I tested just for "amusement" !!!.

With SSD's response time is fine -- although I#m not madly in favour of the RDP method for accessing the VM's and connecting shares is a bit fiddly.

I do though prefer using VMware workstation (not free but I have a work corporate copy) which works very well for me as I can also use LINUX Hosts and connecting some rather non standard hardware to the VM's seems to cause less problem.

However for "Straight" VM's the free HYPER-V seems to be fine - especially as you get an ENTERPRISE strength Hypervisor for FREE. There used to be a problem with getting Wifi virtual switches to work but that seems to be fine.

I can't understand why your mobo seems to have problems --on INTEL mobos / chipsets everything works just fine (in my experience).

    cheers

I'm going to double check the Mobo BIOS version - it is the only thing that could possibly be the problem, because I've used the same setup and successfully run both VMWare player as well as VBox on a win 7 host on that machine with both settings enabled and nary a glitch.

At least I have not had any luck with Build 9926 sysprep. I have tried the remove appx packages method, several times.

  9. johngalt Win User
I figured you were already aware of that *and* had tried it.

I'm giving up trying to get Hyper-V running on my desktop at home and shifting over to building my images in a Citrix XenServer VM - better hardware, local access, and I can access it from home, too....

I could even pinpoint the error down to one appx package. This from the red warning box at the beginning of the customization tut:

Anyway, both links you gave were good read, both confirming my findings (also mentioned in the warning in tut) about the importance of installing without Internet connection.

  11. johngalt Win User
Yeah. Even without an internet connection, though, that stupid set of 'user apps' that it defaults to installing from the Store is causing all sorts of issues. You'd think that they'd already have this worked out after the major grief caused with the preview builds of Win8....

Unless they plan on introducing a new (set of) tool(s) to replace basically everything in the ADK....

    Hi there

running Citrix though is a COMMECIAL product - but there is OPEN SOURCE equivalent XEN SERVER based on Citrix which has the advantage of being able to run from a LINUX system --I'll have to agree Hardware management is better BUT sometimes you'll get issues with things like Sound and special hardware attached via USB devices --so it's not always a given that a Windows VM will work exactly as you want --however it's brilliant for all "Office" type stuff. Local access works too --and also if you run it from something like a CENTOS system you've also got the robustness of Red Hat's enterprise products behind you - and all for FREE !!.

Note the latest version does a lot more though - maybe I'll try it. (I'll use the FREE 6.5 version though - it's based on CITRIX).

    http://www.citrix.com/news/announcem...tware-def.html

HYPER-V seems IMO an Ms Catch up --- not quite ready for prime time if you need your VM's to do anything out of the ordinary.

VMWARE though for typical users who aren't experienced a lot with VM's is still the easiest method of running quite complex VM's decently and it runs on both Linux AND windows so the same VM can run on EITHER system without change --just open the vmx file on EITHER system. It certainly has better USB support (including USB3), 3D graphics and the latest versions of PLAYER and WORKSTATION now have dynamic memory management so RAM is used only when the VM needs it.

    Cheers

Configure Win 7 using AIK/ADK on WIn 10?

We installed the Free 6.2 about 6 months ago. Still haven't gotten around to updating through all of the patches. We have a File Server, we're building a SQL Server, a Help Desk server, and, eventually, a CloneZilla server for imaging, although I may ixnay that last, as I am able to run it off my USB 3.0 UFD running Easy2Boot - it works beautifully, loading CloneZilla SE and imaging up to 20 machines simultaneously in about 25 - 30 minutes flat.

I'm building the new image for deployment across multiple platforms, as the PO for the new desktops we want to deploy has been approved, and we should have them in hand within the next couple of weeks, and I plan to have this image ready to deploy within the end of the week.

Easily upgraded 6.2 to 6.5. Love the ability to directly install hotfixes straight through XenCenter.

However, now that I have a Fully-developed Win7 VM that has all apps I need, All Updates I care to have installed, and for the life of it get it to recognize my UFD to boot off of to load CloneZilla (or any other device other than CD / DVD) so I can grab an image.

I'm now trying to see if I can export the VM and import it into the laptop's Hyper-V and see if I can get access to it that way.

About to say to hell with the whole thing and go back to my original plan - do it on a laptop and just make the partition a lot smaller to accommodate smaller drives.

OK, Since Build 10041 has dropped (in .ESD format anyway), I'm building native .ISOs of all 4 (Pro / Ent & x86 / x64). I may even post them on my MediaFire account for those who want to DL.

Using the ESD decryptor file, I'm making only Full Standard ISOs, not any of the compressed .ESD nor the standard ISO.

I'll check out how well 10041 and Hyper-V works on my system - and I brought my work laptop home as well, so I can have both up and running (hopefully) soon.
