    Using the Raid Calculator, with 5 drives at 4tb each, I should be getting 16TB of storage, however when I create the raid in windows, it's creating a storage pool of 18.1tb and a maximum storage space of 12.1tb. Make it make sense. :

    The little I've read on this suggests there is very little evidence of people installing Windows on a RAID 5 configuration... and more to suggest there are real potential issues with using RAID. Random example:

    On a different slant: whilst Storage Spaces is said to support RAID 5, again, storage spaces seems not particularly robust.

    Personally I'd steer clear of these less commonly used (and possibly less tested?) configurations.

    What is it you hope to gain by using RAID 5?

    Could be some interesting issues in trying to recover from problems when using such a configuration.

    Would raid 5 be right?

    raid 5 one drive can fail. with any number of disks.
    your onboard raid 5 is equal to all of the crappy cards people are suggesting.
    i would use your onboard or splurge for a hardware RAID controller. that will be around 300$ though.

    Is it possible to easily setup Raid-1 on this system ?

    Get the six core CPU's I listed, at 3.3Ghz per core they will more than handle any calculations you throw at them for years to come, and with matching RAM in tri channel you will have a very strong setup.


    My only other suggestion is a full RAID card like the one I listed with SSD's (in RAID 1)for the OS and programs, and then a RAID 5 array for backup and any large files on the board with a offsite final backup
