  1. Connect two computers with ethernet cable

I am trying to transfer files between two Windows 10 laptops using an ethernet cable to network them.

I have a new crossover ethernet cable, which I attached to both computers.

Both now show Ethernet Network 2, but they are not talking to each other.

I followed the instructions in this article: https://techwiser.com/how-to-connect-pc-to-pc-lan-cable/

I set the TCP/IPv4 on one computer like this:

    IP address: 192.168.0.1

    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

    Default gateway: 192.168.0.2

and on the other, like this:

TCP/IPv4 on one computer like this:

    IP address: 192.168.0.2

    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

    Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

In the sharing options, I turned on network discovery, and file and printer sharing, use 128-bit encryption, and

    turned off password protected sharing.

I tried pinging each computer, but I get nothing.

I tried the network troubleshooter, but get nothing. I've tried restarting, but still nothing.

    Any ideas?

    :)

  2. Ethernet Connection

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

We would like to ask additional information that will help us in resolving the issue.

    • What kind of computer are you using? Is it a desktop or a laptop?
    • Did you make any recent changes to your computer?
    • Have you tried troubleshooting the issue by yourself? If yes, what were the steps you have taken so far?

I would suggest you to try the following and check:

    • Verify that the cable connects the modem to the wall jack is connected securely.
    • Verify that the cable connects the computer to the modem is attached securely at both ends.
    • Restart the router/modem.

Follow the steps and let us know if it helps.

  3. Networking computers using Ethernet cable?

    Hi Sam,

You aren’t able to do this with a standard Ethernet cable (things I found out when I was younger Connect two computers with ethernet cable :)

    Here are the steps:

    https://m.wikihow.com/Connect-Two-Computers-Tog...

    But you’ll need a crossover cable -
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crosso...

Note: These are a non-Microsoft websites. The pages appear to be providing accurate, safe information. Watch out for ads on the sites that may advertise products frequently classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product
advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

This cable will allow both PC’s to talk to each other.

    I hope this helps!

Connect two computers with ethernet cable

    Ethernet Cable connection in Dorms

    Press start
Type in "network", and select "Network and Sharing Centre"
Click on Change Adapter Settings at the left.
Check if you have two, one ethernet and one wireles.
If you only have one, wireless, your ethernet driver is not installed (refer to website of manufacturer for driver)
If you have two, and the ethernet cable is plugged in but the adapter is not connected - buy a new cable.
Check with university site management to see if they have purposefully disabled physical network connection.
