    Continuous VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE BSOD loop

    Hello everyone!

I am having an issue when freshly installing Windows 10 on a new PC. I booted from an USB disk and installed the OS and everything went alright in the beginning. The trouble came when I got to windows. I prompted the auto-update to start and after a few minutes the PC restarted itself in the process. But when restarting, before the windows loading screen I was confronted with a BSOD with the error message: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE. Nothing else. The pc shut down, starting up again and again there was the same BSOD. This looped back onto itself indefinitively.

I reinstalled again and this time I tried blocking any and all updates by not hooking up to the internet which worked, but resulted in a computer not usable as intended.

I tried to manually install a few drivers (from Intel and Nvidia first) and was greeted with the same BSOD when I manually restarted the PC. I repeated this process with different drivers. Sometimes I got an added (nvlddmkm.sys) in the blue screen, but it was always missing when the BSOD loop began.

I've been working at it for a few days now. I tried the suggestions in a few forums:
    http://www.windows10forums.com/threads/continuous-bsod-video-tdr-failure-nvlddmkm-sys.1555/
    nvlddmkm.sys Bluescreen / Windows 10
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...e193aad?auth=1

But none prevented a first BSOD from happening and after the loop the only thing I can do is do a fresh install and start from the beginning. As a result I couldn't find any dump files or error reports. Let alone find a way to get to windows after a BSOD to install the program in your posting instructions thread... Leaving me quite neatly in the dark.

I hope some more experienced minds then mine have an idea what I could do!

    Kind regards,
    Kevin

    Continuous VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE BSOD loop

    Hi Althinor,

    Welcome to the 10forums *Smile

The video_tdr_failure means that the recovery for the display drivers failed, this can be caused by quite some things.
As I have not much information from your system I'm going to ask a few questions.
Is your BIOS up to date?
How do you install your drivers everytime? Do you install everything that is included in the installation package?
Have you tried to seat the GPU into different slots, if possible?
Please boot into your BIOS and tell me what the 3.3v, 5v and 12v values are.

It sounds to me like your GPU is the cause, but a proper installation of just drivers or a BIOS update can do wonderful things as can reseating the GPU *Smile

I installed everything in the latest package at first, but since that failed as well I only installed the base drivers and Physx controller the second time. (so not 3D monitor support, no HDMI audio and no experience stuff) Though without any luck.

As far as I know the BIOS is up to date (ver: E7885IMS v1.8) and the values I retrieved were:
    3.3v: 3.408
    5v: 5.080
    12v: 12.192

I have not tried reseating the GPU (As I assume that implies re-attaching it?) and I am not experienced in physically tinkering with my machine so I am hesitant to try~

    editPS: thanks for the welcome!

The BIOS version you're using is not the most recent one, check this site to check for updates.
Reseating = pulling the GPU out of the slot and putting it back in assuming the connections aren't damaged in any way which normally isn't the case.
If you know someone who knows how to do this, ask him/her to do it for you, it isn't that hard to do it though but there is a risk that you can damage components when the things you have to do before reseating and afterwards isn't done properly.

I updated my BIOS (I mistook 1.8 for 1.B) though I went through the driver installer again and the end result was the same.
And you describe exactly why I am hesitant to start tinkering. I do have a friend who can help me with the reseating, but he's out of town at the moment and said he could help me tuesday or wednesday.

If anything else I could try springs to your mind I'd love to hear it!
(Though mainly my worst fear would be that the entire machine is beyond saving)

    Continuous VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE BSOD loop

This video is the 1st I saw when searching a little around for reseating the GPU, it only doesn't mention that you should ground yourself before doing anything but in most cases it is pretty straight forward *Smile

    I've returned!

After a week of hussle to meet I reseated my card without the help of my friend, and it went smoothly (I had no need to be aprehensive *Tongue)

Though in the end it did not matter, I always end in the loop again. Though I do have some new error messages which could help point me in the right direction:

First of was the addition of (nvlddmkm.sys) to the first crash after restarting when I installed the Nvidia drivers. It ended in the loop.
During the second attempt I looked in the device management before restarting and found the error Code 43 in the properties of the Video Addapter. When I tried to uninstall and reinstall the Nvidia video addapter my screen did all sorts of tearing and flickering, resulting in a BSOD and the loop began again. When I disabled the addapter I could restart my system just fine and even got the automatic update to do it's thing.

Which brings me to the final error: Update failure 0x80248007 for both the Nvidia drivers and a Intel video driver.

I hope I can be pointed in the right direction again. In the meantime I'm off on my own looking into the errors. Ciao!

Have you reseated the GPU into the same slot or did you also try different slots?
Could you try a spare GPU or can you borrow a GPU to try?

There is a microsoft Fix-it for this code.(use the windows 8.1 one)
If this does not repair it, you can do it manual with the tutorial on the page.

The power supply and soundcard are in the way to reseat the GPU in another slot, and I don;t have a spare one arround so I can't try that.
I installed the Fix and though my drivers were able to be installed, the result was that they started messing things up again.
