Windows 10: Control Panel

Discus and support Control Panel in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; I pinned it to start and with two clicks you're there, same as before. Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by Dave1776, May 13, 2017.

Don't be so silly - MS have been replacing the Control Panel with Settings menus over several builds. It is NOT new, and the new settings menus are far easier for lesser experienced persons.

All changes have been well tested in the Insider versions - this is one area where any bugs (rare here) are well sorted long before release.

The whole Control Panel had frankly become quite an inconsistent mess but you have not noticed as you are used to it.

At first, I was against its demise, but now I agree with the new menus. The new menus basically put most common settings on primary screens, and lesser ones hidden in sub menus.

Another major plus is the new menus are much easier to use on tablets/touchscreen devices - MS have done a pretty good job overall in ensuring Windows 10 looks and feels the same on any device.

They're removing it because of the migration to the Settings app. Eventually all settings will be there.

One of the regular posts/questions we always see when Windows is updated, both complete new versions, (Eg. The update from XP to Vista), and major updates like the recent Creators update is ...

Users always complain that although the User Interface, (GUI), has been updated to a completely new look that Some menu or Message still uses an old format, Quite often this was levelled at the control panel.

Of course there are a Some (generally a small minority), who prefer that their particular favorite remain unchanged - it's a classic case of "Who Moved My Cheese?", it will I think always happen but is not really something that those in Either Camp can do anything about, and it's certainly not worth worrying about

  5. They really should do it all at once, those slow changes are causing headaches. With one version it was in old CP, with the new version it was in Settings, with the next version they have moved it somewhere else again.

I suppose it takes much more than just moving things around.

Problem I have is I just found the CP much better laid out without having to go digging through loads of menus at least the way it use to be now a days this has slightly changed as the newer CP's have gotten more deeper in the way the menus are in the CP

I personally find moving this to settings does not always help I know for instance they have two.

Good example of how hard it has gotten to finding what you need is the right click desktop menu. Lets say I want to put up a wallpaper and am not that great with computers as not everyone is an expert on things like settings and such. Back in the day everything like wallpaper and screen saver use to be under Display Settings if I remember right but now a days this is what I see at least 4 of the options in my right click desktop menu

    Graphics Properties
    Graphics Options
    Desktop Settings
    Personalize

Now graphics are an image so a user not so familiar might think the wallpaper is under one of these options. It might also be under display as it is the display you are changing what is displayed on the screen.

Under Personalize though while wallpaper is simple finding the screen saver is not as the only area I have found screen saver is under themes which isn't where some users would think. I know I am decent on computers (Not expert by any means but decent and I had to actually google it to find out where the screen saver setting moved to.

So not every change is for the better. Not everyone is an expert on computers. My moms a good example she can't even email me and my fathers tried to teach her but she can't even email. So not everyone knows what their doing on computers and having this in menus that have multiple possibilities isn't good as then people are unsure what menu it is under. Like I said I had to google it myself to find where the screen saver option was as themes to be was always bulk settings where when you applied a theme it would add everything in it from sounds to icons to wallpaper and screen saver where as now themes are not just the bulk but also the individual as well.

So like I said changes are not always for the better! Perhaps you experts responding here might like them but for alot they are just a hassle having to relearn where things are strangely moved to.

I agree I would much rather see it all at once rather then constant little changes that way it is easier to learn it once where it was moved to rather then on every new OS version or update in case of Win 10.

Not everyone has had all versions in fact before I had Win10 upgrade I only had one prior OS that had the settings before that I was on XP as I stayed on XP for the longest time refusing some of the in between OS's which in some cases a lot of users did not like so I refused to upgrade to an OS that I was getting a lot of negative feedback from even from my father who worked on computers for naval ships and was well versed in computers. Even he was giving me negative feedback on some of the intermediate Windows versions so I just refused to upgrade off XP and made a huge jump to either 7 or 8 forget which and then upgraded to 10 when it came out.

So not everyone has seen all the smaller changes if they have not had all the versions or even most of them.

Then that is your fault for taking so long to upgrade really isn't it. This is hardly a new discussion.

No it isn't my fault since there were a lot of users who did not like intermediate versions of windows for a variety of reasons including missing things like mail for a good start! There were a number of good reasons people did not like certain versions of windows and refused to upgrade!

    Control Panel

For those who prefer, or just want.....there's still All Tasks (God Mode). Slowly getting trimmed, as is Control Panel, but still there. Can view as a grouped list or with visual thumbnails, with search. One convenience of All Tasks is the ability to quickly create a shortcut on your desktop, and then put anywhere you wish....just by right clicking. Just another way to get from here to there.......

People not knowing what they are doing shouldn't even play with settings they are not familiar with, no matter if they are placed here or there.
About that example of where desktop picture setting should be. Display settings are no place for things like wallpapers, only parts that reference display itself, monitor and settings for monitor(display). Wallpaper on the other hand clearly belongs to personalisation menu. In XP there was personalization menu in W7 and other windows too, that's nothing new.

I always went into display settings in XP never saw a personalize menu on my versions until the one just prior to Win 10.
