Windows 10: Copying a DVD

He's trying to copy the disc to a disc. There's no need for a ripper, as the disc doesn't have any copy-protection, nor is the OP trying to convert it to another format.

I have loads of DVD's ripped / stored on my NAS server -- I PAID for these and I don't care what a bunch of sleazy overpaid Lawyers say -- if this is for HOME USE I doubt whether any Court on the planet would convict you for making your OWN backups --in any case this way saves having to carry around a DVD player and loads of discs when you travel too.

I'm not getting into the "Piracy" argument -- some people will "Pirate" whatever happens - and remember for Pirating to take place somebody has to UPLOAD the stuff in the first place. Provided you don't do that I can't see what's wrong with ripping DVD's to HDD / NAS for YOUR OWN USE.

The argument that other people can see it is totally absurd -- it's like taking a DVD home and saying you are the only one who is allowed to view it when you put it in the player in your living room. Stupid - totally --these Hollywood people should GET REAL.

Would you buy a CAR if it said you can only fill up at Gas station XXX.

The RIAA and The MPAA has it in their mind that anyone who copies a CD or DVD is a pirate and are going to sell or share their copies. Because they have deep enough pockets we lost the right to fair use.

It's Standard practice for anybody selling commercial products to state that you ARE allowed to make a backup copy for archival / recovery purposes.

If you were to go by the MPAA rulings you could actually infer taking a Windows BACKUP was illegal since you are only allowed ONE copy per machine -- so if I have 5 (licensed) Windows machines storing 5 backups on a single NAS (which BTW isn't actually running Windows as its Host OS) then I'm either a pirate or a criminal or both.

I really would like to see this whole B/S tested in court - and these days where a minority of machines actually have built in DVD players surely it's about time that things like Movies etc were distributed digitally as well -- actually digital distribution with DRM would be harder to break than DVD encryption anyway so why people like SLY SOFT are being hounded to death by Hollywood just shows the whole stupidity of the affair.

BTW there's also a very nice little program if you just want the movie (plus optionally subtitles) from the DVD with zero compresstion -- MAKEMKV -- converts your DVD to mkv format - no menus just the movie plus selectably subtitles. You can then if you like use Handbrake to compress with X265 if you want a reasonably good small file -- usually 35 - 40% smaller than the original uncompressed mkv with unperceptible loss of quality. MAKEMKV does the decryption so you don't need to rip the DVD first with another program. Handbrake needs the DVD / video source to be decrypted before you can use it.
