Windows 10: Correct touchpad driver for older HP notebook?

Foreword: I'm just an average user with some degree of practical routine, thus nowhere near semi expert status, as my question will show. In fact, due to the experience made I normally shy away from doing anything with this machine where I feel I cannot gauge the consequences. That said, here are the details: Since I bought my HP ProBook 440 G4 new, I have had trouble with the Synaptics SMBus ClickPad touchpad. I didn't expect more than a touchpad with basic functions, yet throughout all these years this device has kept overwhelming me with uninvited, often erratic actions of its own. During

Hi, please confirm there appears to be a driver for your touchpad listed in your Device Manager.

What do you see here? If you see these settings, are they correct?




Is there a setting in the BIOS to disable your touchpad?

Your PC appears to be about 5 years old and has drivers listed for Win 10- is that correct?

Hi, normally there would be some Synaptic processes running of course, for example




I suggest you start by creating a snapshot similar to that when your touchpad is working, then another when it is not, and compare them.

If they are the same, the problem is elsewhere.

- it might be that one or more of these processes ceases to run, and after a restart you're back to normal, for example.

The above will help to determine that.

Is there an option in Settings to disable it?

Is there a key combination on your laptop that disables the touchpad?

Are you using the touchpad software provided by HP? This appears to be the last one available for your laptop:

Method 2:

If the issue still persist, I suggest you download the updated touchpad drivers from the manufacturer’s website by entering your model number of the laptop.

After downloading drivers from the above link install the drivers in compatibility mode and check.

Follow the steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode.

• Right-click on the driver setup file and click on
  Properties.
• Click on the compatibility tab and check the box
  Run this program in compatibility mode for and select previous Operating System from the drop down menu.
• Click on Apply and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.
