Windows 10: Corrupted Recycle bin after installing SSD

The Toshiba Satellite laptop boots up fine after converting from HDD to SSD . After several restarts, I suddenly get the message "Windows Recycle bin is corrupted etc " I deleted the items but the message wont go away .

Finally after a search , I ran at elevated command "rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin " it returned 2 items in $recycle.bin folder. I checked and indeed there were two items : Recycle Bin and a folder S-1-5-18 . After a reboot , the problem went away but some time later the problem reappeared.

I ran the sfc scannow routine and it returned no errors . I ran the command "rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin " again shut down the computer for the night .

I booted up the computer this morning and the computer ran fine with no errors . I shut down and restarted several times and it's error free .

What do you think went wrong? If the problem return , how best to fix? Is it safe to delete the $Recycle.bin folder and let windows rebuild it ? I read that this is an alternate method but not sure of the correct procedure .

To prevent your files from being deleted from the Recycle Bin, we suggest increasing the maximum file size your Recycle Bin can keep by following the steps below:

• Right click on the Recycle Bin icon.
• Under the Settings for selected location, select Custom size.
• Fill up the box for your allotted maximum file size for your Recycle Bin.

Corrupted recycle bin


When I turn on the computer each day, I get a message "The Recycle Bin on G:\ is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this Drive\?" Drive G is where I have my Passport external drive for backup. Any suggestions on how to address and resolve this? Thanks.

 

Recycle Bin is corrupted

Each drive contains a hidden Recycle Bin system folder, which are hidden and is used as a temporary storage when you delete files on that drive. Just as any other system files, it can also be corrupted and thus, giving you this error message. With that being
said, can you tell us if this F: drive that you have is a USB flash drive or a
portable hard drive? Please advise.

In the mean time, I suggest that you perform SFC scan on your external storage device and see if it helps. Here's how:

1. Type cmd on the Cortana search box, right click on the result and select
   Run as administrator.
2. Type sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=f:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows

NOTE: replace c:\windows with the correct
drive letter if Windows is installed on a different drive. Hit the Enter key and wait until the scan is finished.

Another step that I can suggest is to reset the Recycle Bin only to the F: drive and see if it helps.

1. Launch cmd as an administrator.
2. Type rd /s /q F:\$Recycle.bin
3. Hit the enter key.
4. Restart your PC.
