Windows 10: Cortana "Something went wrong."

I finally upgraded to Windows 10 a week ago, and most things work fine. Cortana wakes up when I say, "hey, Cortana," then responds with "Something went wrong." Every time.

If I say, "hey Cortana, play some music," it plays music from my PC.

If I say, "hey Cortana, Open IE," it says, "Okay, here's Netbeans IDE 8.1." Then, the PC makes a "critical stop" sound, and Cortana locks up. The little dots keeps going across the top of the Cortana windows, but it never recovers.

If I say, "hey Cortana, Open Internet Explorer," it says, "Sure thing, starting Internet Explorer." Then, the PC makes a "critical stop" sound, and Cortana locks up. The little dots keeps going across the top of the Cortana windows, but it never recovers.

I give it lots of other commands, sometimes it acts like it recognizes what I'm saying and tries to do something,

• "What's the weather?" "Okay starting weather."
• "I want to buy a Microsoft surface PC" "Okay, starting Services" or "Opening This PC."

It invariably responds, as described above with a "critical stop," and Cortana spins and spins.

After the critical stop, my only recourse is to stops Cortana from the Task Manager.

So the microphone (Microsoft Lifecam HD 5001) works with Cortana, because it wakes up, and the mic works with other apps.

FYI, I'm running Windows 10 Preview build 10.0.10586.29, released 12/4/2015. Call + SMS filter doesn't and has never worked on any of my 3 Lumia 920s in any build of Windows 10. It seems you see the true nature of the problem, Microsoft is out of the
sales, service and manufacturing business. I wish them well in their new business model, taking meetings.

Check "Region" and make sure that you are still set for US English.

If that isn't the problem, then there are several solutions that MIGHT work . I advise you to scan for corrupted files:

Go to Task Manager and select File--Run New Task. Type powershell into the box and check the box giving you Admin Privileges; then hit Return. Wait several seconds for PowerShell to start up. Then Type sfc /scannow into the command line and press the [Return] key. The scan may take some time and will end with one of three results. Windows did not find any integrity violations and Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them mean there are now no corrupt files, but Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them indicates a problem.
In this latter case, type (or copy and paste) DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth into the PowerShell window and press the [Return] key. This will download files from Windows Update to replace the corrupt ones and, again, this may take some time.

 

If the above does not allow you to get SFC then read this link and follow
Remember you have to use Command Prompt (Admin)

If there is nothing then it is all ok
If trouble then try this
DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Windows 10 Forums

If you still cannot fix then you will have to do this
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

Well, Bruce, since you don't have corrupted files, did you check to make sure that your region is still US English?
